Box 1 -Fast Food: What’s in it for you? • How would you rate Alex’s diet at the beginning of the video (Excellent, Good, or Poor)? • Specifically what were some of the problems associated with Alex’s diet? • Too much fat • Too much sugar • Too much salt • Not enough vitamins, minerals, and fibre • TOO MUCH FAST and PROCESSED FOOD

  3. Box 2 – Healthy Eating Tips Over time Alex learns to eat healthier meals. List some of the basic Healthy Eating tips that he learned from Derek. • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables (V,M,C,) • Eat more complex carbohydrates • Eat less saturated fats • Eat less simple carbohydrates

  4. Box 3 Complex Carbohydrates • #1 Energy source • Energy for a long time • Come from Breads, Cereals, Rice Pasta, Fruits and Vegetables • Full of vitamins and minerals • Forms the foundation of a healthy diet

  5. Box 4 Saturated Fat • Fat from animals • Too much of it can clog arteries (heart attack) • Causes obesity Simple Carbohydrates • Refined sugar • Short term energy • Causes type 2 diabetes

  6. What’s wrong with junk food? • Junk food is high in: • Saturated fat : • clogs arteries and can lead to heart attack • Causes weight gain and obesity • Salt: • Unhealthy for your heart • Sugar: • Makes people gain weight • Rots teeth • Bad for the blood • May cause other diseases

Box 5 - Healthy Eating + Active Living • How do healthy eating and active living work together to improve a person’s general health and well-being? • Both: • provide more energy • improve self-concept • provide greater resistance to disease • contribute to better overall health • help a person to maintain a weight that is healthy for him/her

  9. Box 6 - Vitality • Healthy Eating • Enjoyable physical activity/healthy living • Positive self/body image • Explain how these three concepts work together to promote good health and well being.

Group Task – Each group gets 1 topic (example below) Family Influences • Parents have major impact – grocery choices (healthy vs. unhealthy), food preparation (fried, boiled, grilled, etc.), meals that are eaten (does the family eat breakfast or does no one prepare anything?) • Family income could influence what is bought. • Family eating patterns – what they eat, when, and where to accommodate for scheduling, family size, activity level. • Do families eat in or out at restaurants or fast food restaurants? Do they buy already prepared foods?
