The 30 Million Word Calamity • By age 4, the average child in a professional family has an accumulated experience of almost 45 million words • By age 4, the average child in a working-class family has an accumulated experience of almost 26 million words • By age 4, the average child in a welfare family has accumulated experience of almost 13 million words
Comprehensive investigation of promotion and retention rates in BCPS from 2007-08 through 2009-10 • Promotion increases at all grade levels and across virtually all groups. • Across all grades tested in 2009-10, 64.3% of promoted students scored at or above • proficiency on FCAT. • Third grade Black male students evidenced the lowest promotion rates for the 2009-10 school year. • The innovation zones with the largest retentions rates were Boyd Anderson (n=831, • 9.6%), Dillard (n=315, 4.4%), Deerfield Beach (n=241, 4.1%), Hallandale (n=172, • 3.6%), and Stranahan (n=144, 3.3%).

Through focused collaboration in task force action groups, community members, parents, teachers, school based leadership, and district leadership will work together to: • Explore methods to raise academic expectations and advance student achievement throughout the district. • Research information to enhance knowledge about strategies for improving education and teacher/leader quality. • Plan, organize, evaluate, and recommend school-based, family, and community initiatives for all levels and all students, including ESE and ESOL.
