  1. Chapter Summary: • Elizer ran with his puss infected foot in the freezing snow • Only Elizer passed the selection… Dad didn’t The snow and low supply of food made it dangerous The infirmary would either be killed by Nazis or get bombed The sick end up being saved

Examples of Dehumanization • If you fall or stop running for even a second, nobody will stop and you are shot • Could not move, had no food… ate snow off of each other’s backs… entertained the soldiers • Insulted as they ran.. Called dogs • Cleaned the barracks.. Men lived there, not pigs. Ironic because they weren’t thought of as men

  3. Forgetting those who fall • He worked with him and then had stomach cramps… poor kid he then fell • Little boy was then trampled by other people • The other people soon forgot about the boy because they only car about themselves • Everyone is in denial  • They only care for themselves 

Father/Son Relationships • Elie and Shlomo • Close now, care for each other • Shlomo cares for Elie • Elie feels a little bit guilty • Meet a Rabbi • DO NOT FALL ASLEEP, IT WONT BE GOOD • Night night… for good • “Where’s my son?” • But Elie knew… • Bad choice • Self preservation • Prays he won’t do the same thing… will he??????? • Hating himself because it is worth it • Many differences

The Violin and Juliek • Pile of people at the entrance of camp • Elie hears Juliek’s voice • Juliek begins playing the violin in the middle of the camp • Juliek plays Beethoven- German composer • Juliek dies the next morning, violin crushed • music= happiness, Juliek’s reason to live • When the violin is destroyed represents human spirit being crushed
