Activities of Note • Letter to Health Canada on fortification of foods • Cookbooks- Canada’s Everyday Diabetes Choice Recipes by Kathy Younker • 3 sub-committees -Labelling -Implementation -GHEG • Position Papers-Sugar Alcohol-published Dec,2002 -Glycemic Index,Sweeteners (draft) - education tool (fact sheet) is planned

  4. Guidelines • Participated in the writing of Clinical Practice Guidelines; NutritionChapter & reviewed draft. Nutrition integrated into relevant sections. Discussion Oct,2003 at conference launch Dec,2003 • Proposed revision of 1999 Nutrition Guidelines joint project with DC and DQ [chaired by Kristin Anderson (MB)] - newtitle: Evidence Based Best Practices for the Nutritional Management of Diabetes Mellitus

CDA Professional Conference • Pre-conference Workshop- community-based nutrition by Heather Komar & Cindy Sass • Nutrition Symposium- GHEG, HESY, fructose debate- It’s role, safety and efficacy. • Carbohydrate Counting – launch of new tool & workshop – will be repeated as is expected to be popular

  8. GHEG- process • Monthly meetings by teleconference • Consultant hired for business plan • Timeline- 2004 after CPG (over 2 budget years) • Recommendations approved by NNC & CDA Senior Management • Evaluate new ADA & DQ resources • Communication Plan – CDA & stakeholders • Evaluation

  9. GHEG- Recommendations • 15 grams available carb • First choice & others • GI, “heart healthy” more variety/cultural • Ease of use • Harmonize with others CFG, DQ, USA etc • Working groups planned for each food group

GHEG- Recommendations con’t • Evaluate resource- traditional format vs new technology • GHEG Food Choice Value Symbols be removed for now with rationale • CFIA- new process 3-5yrs time to set criteria for using CDA symbol • Nutrition message consistent with current guidelines • NEW- evaluate “rounding rules” of the nutrient database (Aug/03)
