  3. Student Group Work • In pairs, answer documents on the Roman Empire. • Think-Pair-Share: Answer the questions in complete sentences

Aim: How was Roman society organized? • Do Now: Copy the vocabulary • Republic: government in which citizens have the right to vote • Patrician: aristocrat landowner • Plebeian: farmer, artisan, or merchant (commoner) • Tribune: official who helped the plebeians protect their rights • Consul: official who was like a king • Senate: aristocratic branch of Rome’s government • Dictator: leader with absolute power

  7. Protection • The Alps and the Mediterranean Sea provided protection for Rome

  8. The Beginning • According to legend, Rome was founded by Romulusand Remus (twin brothers)

  9. Lucky Number 7 • Rome was built on seven rolling hills at a curve on the Tiber River • This strategic location in the middle of the Italian Peninsula gave Rome fertile soil.

  10. Control of Rome • In the beginning 3 groups inhabited Rome: 3. Etruscans 2. Greeks 1. Latins

  11. Greek Influence • Greeks established 50 colonies (settlements) in Italy • These cities became busy with trade • Brought Italy and Rome in closer contact with Greece • Greeks taught Romans how to grow grapes and olives

  12. The Etruscans • Native to Northern Italy • They were skilled metalworkersand engineers • Strongly influencedRomancivilization

  13. Class work • In groups of 4, students with complete the graphic organizer regarding Roman life • We will complete the first one as a class on Geography (as a review) • When we have finished we will then share our answers
