GEMSEC Materials Camp: Inspiring Future Engineers

Genetically Engineered Materials Science & Engineering Center NSF-MRSEC at the University of Washington DMR - 0520567 • Partnering with ASM-International (American Society of Materials, formerly), GEMSEC, for the last 4 years, has been organizing a 1-week long Materials Camp for 35 high school students; • The workshop consists of in-class lectures and hands-on experience in group projects; • The teams of 4-5 students present their project results to their parents and mentors at week’s end; • Students are selected through a rigorous and competitive process by mentors and GEMSEC faculty, from far corners of WA state, as well as other states and overseas; • Materials Camp Students are selected from very competitive public and private high schools as well as those home-schooling or from rural areas; • Track record shows that many students return to pursue engineering career at the University of Washington or universities nationwide and globally.
