WHY IT MATTERS NOW The Puritan work ethic and religious beliefs influence American culture today.
Puritans and Pilgrims • Religious group, want to purify Church of England. • Separatists form independent congregations. • In 1620, flee to escape persecution, found Plymouth Colony.
Mayflower Compact • Puritans landed outside the limits of Virginia Co. charter. -Did not apply to them. • Obey laws agreed upon for the good of the colony. -Self government. -Majority rule.
Massachusetts Bay Colony • Founded by joint-stock company in 1630. • John Winthrop is Puritan colony’s first Governor.
“City Upon a Hill” • Create a moral society. • Civic officials are church members, have a duty to do God’s will. • Puritan adult male vote for General Court; Court chooses governor.
Importance of the Family • Puritans generally migrate as families. • Community makes sure family members behave in “God-fearing” way.
Roger Williams • Minister with controversial ideas. -Forced attendance for church. -Taking Natives Amer. land by force. • General Court orders his arrest; he flees. • 1636, he founds Providence, Rhode Island. -Guarantees separation of church and state, religious freedom.
Anne Hutchinson • Believes people can worship without church, minister, or Bible. • Held discussions that challenged church authority at her home. • Banished in 1638; family, followers leave to Rhode Island.
Native Americans Resist Colonial Expansion • Land Disputes and Treaties. -Spreading westward and north. -Native think treaties are temporary, they’re not. • Pequot War -Take a stand against colonists, nearly destroyed.
King Philip’s War • Lost land, work for English, must follow Puritan laws. • Metacomorganizes tribes to wipe out settlers (1675) • Fighting is fierce; hunger, disease, causalities defeat tribes.
