  6. JIM Click on "Play Sample" The Abolitionist Hymn To the tune of "Old Hundred" We ask not that the slave should lie As lies his master, at his ease, Beneath a silken canopy Or in the shade of blooming trees. We ask not "eye for eye," that all Who forge the chain and ply the whip Should feel their torture, while the thrall Should wield the scourge of mastership. We mourn not that the man should toil; 'Tis nature's need, 'tis God's decree; But let the hand that tills the soil Be, like the wind that fans it, free. The Abolitionist Hymn Sheet Music

  7. Pap- Wait and Bleed, Slipknot You haven't learned a thing I haven't changed a thing My flesh was in my bonesThe pain was always freeI've felt the hate rise up in me... Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves... I wander out where you can't see... Inside my shell, I wait and bleed... Goodbye! Get the hell out of my head because I don’t need this!”  schizophrenic tendencies? Always too messed up to know real from fake and right from wrong • “I have sinned by just making up my mind and taking your breath away”  hurting Huck, Pap is definitely a sinner in many ways • “You haven't learned a thing, I haven't changed a thing”  tries to teach Huck lessons his way

  9. The River- Washing of the Water, Peter Gabriel Letting go, it’s so hardThe way it’s hurting nowTo get this love untiedSo tough to stay with thing’cause if I follow throughI face what I deniedI get those hooks out of meAnd I take out the hooks that I sunk deep in your sideKill that fear of emptiness, loneliness I hideRiver, oh river, river running deepBring me something that will let me get to sleepIn the washing of the water will you take it all awayBring me something to take this pain away River, river carry me onLiving river carry me onRiver, river carry me onTo the place where I come fromSo deep, so wide, will you take me on your back for a rideIf I should fall, would you swallow me deep insideRiver, show me how to floatI feel like I’m sinking downThought that I could get alongBut here in this waterMy feet won’t touch the groundI need something to turn myself aroundGoing away, away towards the seaRiver deep, can you lift up and carry meOh roll on though the heartland’til the sun has left the skyRiver, river carry me high’til the washing of the water make it all alrightLet your waters reach me like she reached me tonight Click "Preview" for Washing of the Waters

  10. ANALYSIS • “River river, carry me on. Living river, carry me on.”  The river carried the characters throughout their journey • “So deep, so wide, will you take me on your back for a ride. If I should fall, would you swallow me deep inside.” • “I feel like I’m sinking down, thought that I could get along. I need something to turn myself around.”  The river can also be scary, suck people under, prevent them from turning around. • “River deep, can you lift up and carry me. Oh roll on though the heartland ’til the sun has left the sky. River, river carry me high ’til the washing of the water make it all alright .  The river helps the characters in some ways and also it is very beautiful. The river is the path to freedom so the washing of the water will make it alright. • “So tough to stay with this thing ‘cause if I follow it through I face what I denied.”  Covers the regrets Huck and Jim may have had while going down the river. (List of Shipwrecks on Page)

  12. Analysis • “I caught the mirror as I opened your letter, I was lying, lying.”  lying robbers, contemplating murder, self reflection (mirror) • “Another shipwreck, I understand that I may never see home again.”  Was more unexpected except for the tied up robber • “I see you crying, crying. You said it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter,it really doesn't matter at all.”  It doesn’t matter, they were just criminals (Huck’s opinion although he felt bad) • “Another shipwreck, I understand it's time to admit. Despite our endeavors. Can't find what ever we lost.”  Many lost objects, many lost memories from the ship • “I may never see home again.”  they ended up dying

  13. Huck Faking His Own Death- Death Song, Choking Victim • I give you money, you give me death. You think it's funny, I gasp for breath. Watch a cop for us today, an opiate, a new decay, your breathing stops this dying day. The big time, it killed Crusty Dave. We're all alone, we miss his heat, and now I feel so incomplete. The death he tasted was so sweet, from womb to tomb, the rotting meat! I give you money, you give me death. You think it's funny, I gasp for breath.I give you money, you give me death. You think it's funny, I gasp for breath. I give you money, you give me death. You think it's funny, I gasp for breath. • You call us barbarians... Eh.It is an honorable name.We mean to cancel the world you civilized people made.We will simply erase history from the time that machinery and weapons threatened more than they offered. And when you die... the last living reminder of hell will be gone.Gone.-Something at the beginning from Omega Man or some other post-apocalyptic movie with anti-technology zombies. Everyday it comes my way in different shapes & forms. Greed, hate & jealousy, the faces it adorns. And though I walk the valley in the shadow of my deeds, consider this, it's always there; the ends to meet the needs.I give you money, you give me death. You think it's funny, I gasp for breath. Tompkins Square is everywhere, it's written on the walls they'll suffocate yer real estate and grab you by yer balls my life is such a living hell, a squatted rotted empty shell no mistakes to learn

  14. Analysis • “You call us barbarians... Eh.”  Huck is uncivilized so faking his death is somewhat barbarian-like • “We mean to cancel the world you civilized people made.Gone.”  Huck wants to escape his cabin imprisionment and Miss. Watson • “Everyday it comes my way in different shapes & forms. Greed, hate & jealousy, the faces it adorns. And though I walk the valley in the shadow of my deeds, consider this, it's always there; the ends to meet the needs.”  People are jealous of Huck’s money, people constantly want to change Huck. He decides to change. • “I give you money, you give me death. You think it's funny, I gasp for breath.”  This seems as if it could be directed towards Pap and his abusiveness • “My life is such a living hell, a squatted rotted empty shell no mistakes to learn.”  Huck feels as if his life will always be unsatisfying so he decides to fake his death and start anew.

  15. Racism- Black Liberation Struggle, Gregory Isaacs Black Liberation Struggle, Song Clip! • OOH YEHA NEW DAWN IS AWAKE UPYET NOTHING IS CHANGED OOHAS FREEDOM WAS ONCE TAKENDON'T WANNA LIVE NO MORE IN CHAINSDATS WHY I CALL A BLACK LIBERATION STRUGGLEI NO GIVE UP THE FIGHT NO NOCAUSE ITS A BLACK LIBERATION STRUGGLEMAN AND MAN UNITEEVERYTIME I OPEN MY MOUTHTHE WICKED YEHJUST TRYING TO GET ME OUTBUT ITS A BLACK LIBERATION STRUGGLENA GIVE UP THE FIGHT NO NO NOOHA ME SAY BLACK LIBERATION STRUGGLEFOR SENSE ALL UNITETHERE MUST BE SOME CHANGE YEHCAUSE JAH GOD TOLD MEN IN TO HIS REIGNDON'T GIVE UPPLEASE LIVE UPDON'T GIVE UPPLEASE LIVE UPI SAID A NEW DAWN IS AWAKE UPYET NOTHING AS CHANGEDUS FREEDOM WAS ONCE TAKENI DON'T WANNA LIVE NO MORE IN CHAINSDAT'S WAT I CALL A BLACK LIBERATION STRUGGLEAND I WONT GIVE UP THE FIGHT....NO NO...FADE

DAT'S WAT I CALL A BLACK LIBERATION STRUGGLE AND I WONT GIVE UP THE FIGHT....NO.”

  17. Hypocrisy- Ironic, Alanis Morissette • Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you When you think everything's okay and everything's going right And life has a funny way of helping you out when You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up In your face It's a traffic jam when you're already late It's a no-smoking sign on your cigarette break It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife It's meeting the man of my dreams And then meeting his beautiful wife And isn't it ironic... don't you think A little too ironic... and yeah I really do think... Repeat Chorus Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out Helping you out • An old man turned ninety-eight He won the lottery and died the next day It's a black fly in your Chardonnay It's a death row pardon two minutes too late Isn't it ironic ... don't you think Chorus It's like rain on your wedding day It's a free ride when you've already paid It's the good advice that you just didn't take Who would've thought ... it figures Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye He waited his whole damn life to take that flight And as the plane crashed down he thought 'Well isn't this nice...' And isn't it ironic ... don't you think Repeat Chorus

  18. Analysis • I decided to choose this song for hypocrisy not only because it is a great song, but also because the definition of hypocrisy is “a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess.” The song Ironic is also very hypocritical because the song is not Ironic at all, it just pretends to be. Click Ironic, then click the first blue arrow

  19. The Grangerford & Shepherdson Love Affair- You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away, The Beatles • Here I stand head in hand, turn my face to the wall.If she's gone I can't go on,feelin' two-foot small.Everywhere people stare, each and every day.I can see them laugh at me,and I hear them say:Hey you've got to hide your love away.Hey you've got to hide your love away. How could I even try,I can never win.Hearing them, seeing them,in the state I'm in.How could she say to me,love will find a way.Gather round all you clowns, let me hear you say:Hey you've got to hide your love away.Hey you've got to hide your love away.

  20. Analysis • “If she is gone I can’t go on.”  although their families can never know, they can’t live without each other • “You’ve got to hide your love away.”  forbidden love • “How could I even try, I can never win. Hearing them, seeing them, in the state I'm in.”  Why would they even try to stay together? Their families will disown or kill them. They cannot win with or without each other. • “Love will find a way. Gather round all you clowns.”  Death ends up being the way Meaning Behind the Song- Wikipedia

  21. The Nonesuch Play- White Rabbit, Jefferson Starship • One pill makes you largerAnd one pill makes you small,And the ones that mother gives youDon't do anything at all.Go ask AliceWhen she's ten feet tall. And if you go chasing rabbitsAnd you know you're going to fall,Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillarHas given you the call.Call AliceWhen she was just small. When the men on the chessboardGet up and tell you where to goAnd you've just had some kind of mushroomAnd your mind is moving low.Go ask AliceI think she'll know. When logic and proportionHave fallen sloppy dead,And the White Knight is talking backwardsAnd the Red Queen's "off with her head!"Remember what the doorknob said:"Feed your head. Feed your head. Feed your head" Click on the 30 Next to "White Rabbit"

  22. Analysis • “Go ask Alice.”  the nice girl in the story • “And if you go chasing rabbits and you know you’re going to fall.”  Nonesuch song of Alice and Wonderland. • “When logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead.”  Nonesuch plays don’t really have proportion and they are definitely somewhat sloppy. • “Knight is talking backwards.” “Queen is ‘off with her her head.’”  The Duke and the Dauphin… royalty connection • “Feed your head, feed your head, feed your head.”  feed the audience’s head with lies

  23. Angry Mob Scene- March of the Witch Hunters, Wicked (sung) It's due to her I'm made of tinHer spell made this occurSo for once I'm glad I'm heartlessI'll be heartless killing her!And the lion alsoHas a grievance to repayIf she'd let him fight his own battlesWhen he was youngHe wouldn't be a coward today!Kill her! Kill the witch! Wickedness must be punishedBrave Witch-Hunters, I would join you if I couldBecause Wickedness must be punishedPunishedPunishedBut good! • Go and hunt herAnd find her And kill her(spoken) Good fortune, Witch Hunters!Go and hunt herAnd find herAnd kill her(spoken) Kill the Witch!Wickedness must be punishedEvil effectively eliminatedWickedness must be punishedKill the Witch! (spoken) And this is more than just a service to the Wizard.I have a personal score to settle with Elph-withThe Witch!

  24. Analysis • I chose this song because it is your typical angry mob scene (pitchforks, burning clubs and all.) In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the scene where the angry mob is on the go is very similar to the Wicked scene where the angry mob of witch hunters is on the go.
