  1. The introduction of road cases 29 August 2014

  2. Personal introduction • I’ve been working in CSSD and loan set for over 15 years. • My first loan set was a spinal set. • There have been many changes since I started; the introduction of road cases being one.

  3. Positive points • Reduces the manual handling and in turn minimizes the risk of injury. • Unlike the normal tubs, the road cases can not be over stacked on top of one another, diminishing the temptation of stacking above the recommended height. • Instrument trays are easily transferred from the road cases onto the working tables. • Because road cases are fixed in position, we no longer have to lift a tray out of a tub that is too small for the instrument tray, avoiding hand strains and finger injuries.

  4. Negative points • Because road cases are one standard size, loan sets that could have fit into a smaller containers are being put in much larger ones. This is not utilizing space effectively. • Sometimes two different cases are put in the same road case which can cause difficulty when identifying one patients’ set from another. • Wear and tear is becoming more noticeable. We have noticed plastic straps are breaking off and on occasion door handles are not closing properly due to handle mechanics becoming loose and latches missing, therefore we have noticed poor improvisation by doors being taped closed.

  5. Negative points (continued) • On some occasions, road cases are coming into the hospital covered in a lot of dust, appearing to have been left outside the warehouse on a windy day. • We have noticed patient identification labels from previous use have not been removed properly, which can cause some confusion on first glance.

  6. The introduction of the road cases into the workplace This is a gradual process that is still ongoing. • Although we have access to a lifter, we have to consider the limitations of the lifter as it may not elevate heavy loads. If it’s a wall fixed lifter we have to consider the position of the working table and sometimes the position can be limited to the working space. • Because we have numerous loan sets coming in at the same time as we have sets waiting to be collected, space can become very limited. We are fortunate to have access to another room in which we can keep empty tubs and road cases in. However sometimes this space can be restricted also.

  7. My final conclusion

  8. Who is responsible for the maintenance of the road cases?
