Ile de France Notes • Population- over 11 million (20% of France’s population) • Cities- Paris (capital), Chartres, Versailles • Industries- Tourism, Construction • Paris- Seine river flows through, la rive gauche, la rive droite (Left Bank, Right Bank), Ile de la Cité, Ile St Louis (41 square miles) • History- developed from tiny fishing village on Ile de la Cité, 52 BC=Roman control, called city “Lutecia” meaning marshy place, city spread, in 1800s layout of medieval city replaced by planned streets, wide boulevards, bridges, parks • La fête nationale- 14 juillet, commemorates taking of the Bastille
