Asia: ThucQuangDuc • Buddhists in Vietnam were oppressed by the Catholic president, Ngo Dinh Diem. • Passed laws to discriminate against Buddhists: • favored Catholics for public service and military promotions, as well as in the allocation of land and tax breaks. • Catholics often looted, raided, and destroyed Buddhist pagodas (altars). • Diem eventually banned the use of Buddhist flags, especially during the holiday of Vesak. • When Buddhists defied the order, Vietnamese soldiers fired into the crowd, killing 9 people.
