  2. Activity: Represent the Data • The arctic fox lives in places where the winter temperature is -40˚C. • The desert rattlesnake sunbathes when the temperature is +40˚C.

  3. Activity: Represent the Data • Tennis players like the temperature around +22˚C. • Antarctic penguins are comfortable at -2˚C.

  4. Activity: Represent the Data • The kangaroo lives where the average temperature is +29˚C.

  5. Numbers such as these (-40,+22,+40,-2 and +29) can be ordered and compared by putting them on a number line.

  6. Inquire*Refer back to previous slide if necessary. • 1.Draw a horizontal number line with positive numbers on the right and negative numbers on the left. • 2. Mark the temperatures on the number line. • 3. Do integers increase or decrease from right to left on the number line? • 4. Do integers decrease from left to right on the number line?

  7. Compare • Compare -4 and +5. Is -4 greater than or less than +5? Choose A or B. • A) -4< +5 (-4 is less than +5) • B) -4 > +5 (-4 is greater than +5) • *< this is the symbol for less than it resembles an L • *> this is the symbol for greater than it resembles a backwards L

  8. Solution • If you chose A) you’re correct! -4< +5 (-4 is less than +5)
