A few thoughts… • 10-15% proposals are funded by most USDA and NSF panels • Higher funding rates for Postdoc/Seed/New investigator grants • Higher funding rates for NEW grant programs • How hard is it to get grants? • Why do I continue to write grants? • How to become successful in grant writing? • I like challenges, I like testing ideas, I like working with people • Numerous “second-chance” opportunities, very rewarding process • Be prepared, be persistent, and be patient = Be passionate • Able to critique yourself, willing to accept criticism and to change • Collaboration is VERY important CJ Tsai, 2008

  3. and afterthoughts… • Find a niche in your area of study, build expertise • Be familiar with your area, look around and ahead • Innovative combination of ideas and approaches • Be a pioneer, don’t be a follower • Be moderate on budget request • The reward and surprises often outweight frustration! • USDA-NRI: $240K requested, awarded $171K  $220K • NSF: $1,999K requested, $2,114K awarded (plus $50K REU) • DOE: $1,326K requested, $1,386K awarded • Have fun!
