Copy homework into planner. • Work on warm up in pen. • Grade HW 1.8 (key on your table). • **TUTORING IS MOVED TO TOMORROW, 9/22.** • **UNIT 1.2 QUIZ WILL BE ON NEXT TUES/WED.** • ________________________________________________ Sept. 21, 2011Ms. Wu says…Get to work!  WARM UP: A factory hired 130 new workers during a year in which 27 workers retired and 59 left for other reasons. If there were 498 workers at the end of the year, how many were there at the beginning of the year?

Vocabulary • Terms: the parts of an expression that are added together (constants and variables) • Like Terms: terms that have the same variable parts (same variable raised to the same power) • Constants are also like terms • Coefficient : the number part of a term with a variable part (4x, 6y) • When combining like terms, just add the coefficients • For like x and –y, the coefficients are not written, but they are 1 and -1 respectively

  3. Formatting • Coefficient comes before the variable • In expressions, variables come before constants • With multiple variables, order them alphabetically

Commutative and Associative Properties of Addition#5 from HW 1.8 • 23 + 8m + 4n – 5m – 27 = [change all subtraction to adding a negative] • 23 + 8m +( 4n + -5m) + -27 = [commutative property of addition: a + b = b + a] • 23 + 8m + (-5m + 4n) + -27 = [associative property of addition: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)] • 23 + (8m + -5m) + 4n + -27 = [combine like terms] • (23 + 3m) + 4n + -27= [commutative property of addition] • 3m +( 23 + 4n) + -27 = [commutative property of addition] • 3m + 4n + (23 + -27) = [combine like terms] • 3m + 4n + -4 = • 3m + 4n -4

  7. Mystery Numbers • PART 1: Find each of the following mystery numbers. Record in your notes the process that you followed to find each mystery number. • PART 2: Compute the sum of the mystery numbers. Write the sum in the box and raise your hand so Ms. Wu can check it. • When you finish you’ll get a sticker!  • PART 3: Create a mystery number problem like the ones above to try to stump the class!

Unit 1.1 Common Mistakes/Misunderstanding • Least to Greatest instead of Greatest to Least • Sega Game World had more info than necessary, don’t include $10 in the domain • Can exchange multiple bills (didn’t deduct pts.) • Wrote “recursive rules” instead of functional equations for sequences (write in terms of term numbers) • How will that rule help you find the 43rd term?

Unit 1.1 Common Mistakes/Misunderstanding • Substituting in values for –a2 and c2 • Confusing “square” and “square root” • Writing an expression instead of an equation • not completely correcting all problems for Unit 1.1 quiz corrections … IN THE FUTURE (Unit 1.1 Test corrections, ahem), EVERYTHING MUST BE CORRECTED, NOT JUST RE-ATTEMPTED.

  10. Quiz Corrections/Test • In order to re-test for up to a 90, all missed problems must be re-worked and correct. The completely corrected test is your ticket to re-take. • You have until 9/26 to re-test, and you must make an appointment to re-test after school at least two school days in advance.  Thus the last day to make a re-test appointment for the Unit 1.1 Test is 9/22. • The score on the second exam overrides the first.
