Two-Phase Committee Charge Recommend the critical capabilities needed over the period from 2015 to 2025 that would enable progress on the science program articulated in the Astronomy & Astrophysics and Planetary Decadal Surveys. (Not only observational capabilities, but also theoretical, computational, laboratory, research support, workforce, education) Recommend the balance of investments in new and in existing, but evolved, facilities, grants programs, and other activities that would deliver the needed capabilities within the constraints of each of the provided budgetary scenarios. (May include closure or divestment of facilities, termination of programs and other activities.) AAAC
Progress to Date • Weekly full-committee telecons since Sep 2011 • 1st face-to-face meeting Oct 21-23 • Numerous working-group telecons since Oct • Facilities submitted updated Long-Range Plans and Vision Statements in Jan • Community briefed at Jan AAS Town Hall • 2nd face-to-face meeting Jan 12-14; Phase 1 completed • Community Input accepted by Email from Oct 26 to Jan 31; ~102 messages received, categorized, assimilated • Many working-group telecons Jan – Apr for Phase 2 • Additional input solicited from OIR and RMS observatories, received in March • 3rd face-to-face meeting Apr 12-14; Phase 2 completed • Current: report 1st draft being written AAAC
Future Timeline • Report delivery to AST ~July • Report acceptance by MPSAC ~ late summer • Internal MPSAC reviewers before MPSAC telecon • MPSAC acceptance is required before plan can be made public or be acted on • AST implementation plan available ~ November • AST implementation working group has been formed (AST Program Staff), and is working on producing: • a strategy for implementing the PR recommendations, which identifies the issues that must be addressed • a management plan for implementation, including roll-out of the report, • a plan for carrying out the implementation.
