Prep Work • Define the following words • Value • Culture • Individual • Rights • Common Good • What is the difference between a Democracy and a Republic. • Which form of government provides the most freedom and rights to the people? • How did Rome’s Republic work? Use the Polybius reading to answer this question. How did the Athenian Democracy work? • What was the importance of the 12 tables? What did it offer Roman citizens and why was it created? Why did Athens not have something like this for their Democracy? • Do the benefits of protecting individual rights outway the downsides? Explain.

  4. Opening Question • We are trying to understand the differences between the Athenian government and the Roman government. Why and how each government formed differently. What the advantages and disadvantages are to a Democracy and a Republic. • Seminar One (Inside Circle) • How do the values of a culture influence the role and rights of the individual? • Seminar Two (Outside Circle) • How can individual rights and a nation’s view of the common good create stability or conflict?

Reflection • In thinking about the 14th amendment debate what is more important: protection of individual rights or the effect the amendment and its consequences are having on the American economy? Explain your answer. • Why did both Athens's democracy and Rome’s republic eventually fail and turn into Empires ruled by single individuals?
