COUNSELING IN ITALY • IN ITALY COUNSELING IS A DEVELOPING PROFESSION ADRESSING IMPORTANT SOCIAL ISSUES • IN JANUARY 2013 THE GOVERNMENT RECOGNIZED IT AS AN UNREGULATED PROFESSION, BUT DID NOT DEFINE REQUIREMENTS FOR PRACTISE AND ACCESS TO THE PROFESSION • IN APRIL 2013 FEDERCOUNSELING WAS ESTABLISHED TO PROMOTE THE E.A.C. TRAINING STANDARDS AND UNIFY THE MANY ITALIAN COUNSELING ASSOCIATIONS. • THE INTEREST IN AND NEED FOR COUNSELING IS STILL INCREASING IN ITALY

COUNSELOR EDUCATION • THERE ARE FEW ACADEMIC PROGRAMS • THERE IS NO DEGREE IN COUNSELING • PRIVATE COUNSELING SCHOOLS PREPARE FOR THE PROFESSION • MINUMUM QUALIFICATION: HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA • MANY ITALIAN COUNSELING ASSOCIATIONS FOLLOW THE EUROPEAN STANDARDS FOR TRAINING: 3-YEAR PROGRAM, INCLUDING 450 HOURS OF TRAINING, 150 HOURS OF INTERNSHIP AND 50-100 HOURS OF COUNSELING SESSIONS AS A CLIENT (PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT)

  20. AREA OF APPLICATION • COUNSELORS IN ITALY ARE GENERALLY SELF-EMPLOYED • PRIVATE AND AGENCY SETTINGS • AT PRESENT FEW COUNSELORS ARE EMPLOYED IN SCHOOL • SCHOOL COUNSELING IS ORIENTED MUCH MORE TOWARDS THE REMEDIATION OF PROBLEMS THAN TOWARD THE PREVENTION
