Evaluation of Windows 7 RC Build 7100

  2. Background • Vista was not received warmly due to bugs, crashes, poor performance, software incompatibility etc • Microsoft has been working on a new Operating System • Current available release Windows 7 RC Build 7100 May 2009

  3. Motivation Claims have been made about improvements that have been made on Windows 7 since the XP era and the ill fated Vista era: • Ease and speed of installation • Fast start-up and shutdown time • Enhanced performance (graphics, disk I/O, robustness etc) • Security • Software compatibility • User friendliness This assessment is being carried out to validate some of these claims

Importance of this Research • Every new OS should be tested/evaluated before being deployed at full scale to allow for: • Planning of transition (upgrade and training) • Avert loss of time and revenue through crashes and incompatibilities • Evaluate availability of system support • It affords users the opportunity to make informed decisions when choosing the OS that suites their needs

  5. Tests currently being carried out • Installation time for each OS • Disk space used in the standard install • Logon, boot up and shutdown time • File copy from USB to HD and from HD to HD • Performance Test benchmarking • Strain Test benchmarking

Points to Note • The same computer hardware is being used for all tests • Fresh installations of OSes • Results obtained will reflect what one gets when they install a plain OS without any tweaks or configuration changes (standard install) like most users do. • Install time is measured from the moment the option to boot from CD/DVD was chosen until the point where the desktop reached. • Windows 7 version being used: 32bit RCBuild 7100 (Ultimate) • XP version being used: 32bit SP3 (Professional)

  8. Boot Time and Shutdown Time • Time to get to logon screen • Time to get to working desktop • BootRacer • Time to shutdown • Being tested with and without applications installed

Performance Testing • PassmarkPerformanceTest version 7.0 is being used to assess perfomance • It hosts a number of test suites each of which contains a number of different tests designed to measure different aspects of a computer system: • CPU test suite is designed to measure CPU operations • Graphics test suite tests of standard two dimensional graphical functions • 3D Graphics test suitemeasures the performance of the 3D graphics hardware installed in the machine • Disk test suite is designed to measure the rate at which files are read and written • CD/DVD test suite measures CD read speed.
