    1. Protective Conductors

    2. Introduction Protective conductors connect all exposed and extraneous metalwork together This protects against indirect contact

    3. Earthing Conductor A protective conductor connecting the main earthing terminal of an installation to an earth electrode or other means of earthing

    4. Earthing Conductor Size depends on the type of installation Domestic size is usually 16mm2

    5. Earthing Conductor

    6. Main Equipotential Conductors In each installation, main equipotential bonding conductors shall connect to the main earthing terminal all extraneous conductive-parts of that installation. Examples would be Gas, Water, Central Heating and Lightning Protection

    7. Main Equipotential Conductors Size depends on the type of installation Domestic size is usually 10mm2

    8. Main Equipotential Conductors

    9. Circuit Protective Conductors The circuit protective conductor forms part of the final circuit connecting together all exposed conductive parts and connecting them to the main earthing terminal in the consumer unit or distribution board.

    10. Circuit Protective Conductors Size depends on the type of circuit Can be calculated Table 54G of BS7671 is often used for simplicity

    11. Circuit Protective Conductors

    12. Reasons for Earthing and Bonding Low impedance (resistance) path under fault conditions Prevents conductive parts of an installation that dont form part of a circuit from becoming live under fault conditions Keeps all conductive material within an installation at a common potential
