  6. Key issues for success • Deliver MONOPRIX sales outlets in Greater Paris by rail • Start up of an experimental service in 2007 • Define criteria-meeting solutions • Economic and financial appeal • Social, economic & environmental factors • Logistic feasibility

  7. Targets • Retain current logistics over 2 warehouses • The Paris-Melun line: use the rail lines available at off-peak hours • Optimise store deliveries • No change to delivery lead times

  8. Description of the project • Rail transport to deliver merchandise to 60 Monoprix stores inside Paris. • General merchandise (GM) and soft drinks (SD) • From the warehouses in Combs-la-Ville (77) and Lieusaint (77) • To a junction platform in Paris • Using line D of the RER (regional train, Paris to Melun) and/or the Circular Line (Grande Ceinture)

  12. PART 2 CHOOSING A SITE IN PARIS

  13. Junction sites in Paris

  14. Utilisation of infrastructures • Advantages • Ground available in the heart of Paris • Good connection with the rail network • Drawbacks • Limited number of junction sites • In great demand from promoters and town-planners • Complex split of land (SNCF/RFF) • The way sites are cut up • Development and upgrading work now indispensable • Cost, time lines • Integrating activity with the environment • Immediate neighbourhood (pollution, noise…) • Rail work sites

  15. Site at Paris-Bercy :Halle G. Lamé Rail quayside SAMADA Bercy Gare de Lyon Road quayside NGV Station Melun

  16. Halle G. Lamé after renovation • Integration of a logistics facility in the urban environment • Building of an anti-noise device to accommodate freight trains • Architectural style • But still a few fears on the part of neighbours

  17. Platform at Bercy:rail quayside Available length: 200 m Acoustic protection (boarding)  acoustic test to be conducted

  23. Bercy: Railway Approach • 1 rail operator = VFLI • Fret SNCF subsidiary • 5 shuttles / week • 17 freight cars average a day (22 max) • unloading : 21:30 / 04:30 • Rolling stock • Diesel particle filter Engine

  24. End deliveries: NGV trucks • Natural Gas Vehicle, low-noise, 29 sq. m ground-space, the equivalent to 21 pallets • Environmental benefits: • Low pollution emissions • Low-noise vehicles

  25. End deliveries: NGV trucks • Technical drawbacks: • Limited range and power • Higher purchase and operating costs • But city centre locations offset the drawbacks of GNVs.

  26. Platform at Bercy:NGV station

  27. Environmental gains Greatly reduced emissions of pollutants: 410 t fewer CO2 emissions = - 47% Harmful particles = - 52% Volatile organic compounds = - 44% NOx = - 56% 700 000 km reduced per year 250 rail shuttles substitute 10 000 trucks per year
