This project delves into the Marienthal Studies, a seminal examination of the effects of long-term unemployment conducted during the 1930s in a former textile factory community near Vienna. Led by Marie Jahoda, the study revealed significant socio-psychological consequences, emphasizing that prolonged unemployment leads to passive resignation rather than social unrest. Students engage through guided visits to relevant exhibits, photography sessions, and image editing tasks, drawing parallels between historical idleness and contemporary issues, while exploring historical aesthetics.

Marienthal-Studies • From 1820 to 1930 "Marienthal" was the name of a complex of a textile factory and a labour colony in the South of Vienna. At its peek time it employed up to 1,300 workers. • The area included apart from the factory also social infrastructure, e.g. a hospital and a kindergarten, theatres and facilities for sports. • During the Economical Crisis in the 1930ies the factory was closed down in a minimum of time, leaving about 1,200 workers and their families unemployed. Marienthal-StudiesAims • Students are to compare the "idleness" as an attested result of unemployment with the current situation. • Via photographs and image editing the pupils are to project their thoughts into the then situation, to internalize and recognize possible parallels. • The pupils are to recognize the aesthetic features of the photography of that time (sepia-tone, slight overexposure, deckle edge) and to imitate them with the help of modern image editing programs. • Duration: 5 sessions (4 hours each) Analysis – Nov. 2013 criticART
