Understanding the Cytoskeleton: Structures, Functions, and Pathological Implications

This publication provides a comprehensive overview of the cytoskeleton, focusing on its main components: microtubules, intermediate filaments, and microfilaments. Microfilaments, made of globular actin proteins, are critical for cellular structure and function. The article discusses the nucleation and elongation processes involved in microfilament formation and the role of various actin-crosslinking proteins in forming actin structures. Additionally, it highlights current research, illustrations, and acknowledgments, emphasizing the importance of the cytoskeleton in biology and its implications in pathology.

  1. ANAT3231: Cell Biology Cytoskeleton and its Pathology Tulin Demir, Lucy Rose Deng, Sarah, Sze-wei and Eilen Saekang • Introduction • Microtubules • Intermediate Filaments • Microfilaments Intermediate Filaments • Microfilaments • Microfilaments are essentially polymers of globular protein actin. These long, thin fibres are the thinnest of the three cytoskeletal filaments and are about 8nm in diameter. Formation of microfilaments requires two steps: • Nucleation; and • Elongation • Different actin cross linking proteins form either bundles or networks of actin filaments. • PICTURE/TABLE OF DIFF PROTEINS WITH ACTIN Captions to be set in Times or Times New Roman or equivalent, italic, between 18 and 24 points.
