  2. Introduction • The Getty Villa is a powerful source of artifacts from Ancient Rome, documenting the Roman Empire. • Seeing 2,000 years old artifacts was a powerful influence in my understanding of the immensity, power and influence, even today, of the Roman Empire.

  3. Etruscan Art • Pitcher, 620 BCE, terra cotta • Shows influence of trade from Corinth, Greece (shape) and Phoenician traders (exotic animals etched in blue and scalloped decoration). • Travel and long distance trade: economic power and cultural influence.

  4. Greek Art • (Fact) Bearded man, made of marble, around 160 BC • (Commentary) Example of power - big Roman nose (sign of leadership) • Many leaders today also have big noses and strong features (Obama).

  5. Roman Art • (Fact) Roman bull statue, gilded, around 100 BC-79 CE, Pompeii, possible offering to the God, Jupiter. • (Commentary) Bull: symbol of power-Gold, energy, anger and aggression of bull

  8. Conclusion • So what? What did you recognize (about the Roman Empire) when you walked out of the Getty Villa? • *Example: I did not realize how much influence the Roman Empire had on all we identify as a “classic,” such as columns, statues, and symbols of power we still use today.
