Chapter 4 • “You could have had everyone when the shelters were finished. But you had to hunt.” • As Ralph talks to Jack about letting the fire go out, tensions run high. Ralph feels that the most important thing is keeping the fire burning at all times so that the smoke could potentially attract rescuers, but the other boys are more concerned with more basic needs – food and water. • The other boys have fallen back on basic survival instincts and the different priorities within the group are causing turmoil.
Chapter 4 (cont) • “[Piggy] was the only boy on the island whose hair never seemed to grow.” • As Ralph observes the changing appearances of the majority of the boys in the group, he notices that Piggy has not changed. He has maintained his opinions, hasn’t lost weight, and his hair has remained the same length. The other boys are changing, but Piggy hasn’t exhibited any changes. • Most of the boys have began adapting to their new environment, but Piggy isn’t adapting. In nature, when populations don’t adapt to environmental changes, the populations’ numbers fall as they are not suited to their environment and die. Could this possibly cause later harm to Piggy?
Chapter 5 • “The trouble was, if you were a chief you had to think, you had to be wise.” • Ralph holds a meeting, attempting to tell the group to become more organized, create better shelter, and keep a fire burning at all times. Ralph’s newfound leadership role has changed the way he thinks, as he learns to analyze problems. Indeed, everyone is changing except for Piggy.
Chapter 5 (cont) • “If I blow the conch and they don’t come back, then we’ve had it. We shan’t keep the fire going. We’ll be like animals. We’ll never be rescued.” • Once his meeting dissolves into arguing and disorder, Ralph wants to attempt once more to regain control, but Piggy warns him against it, saying that if he tries to call the meeting to order once more that they won’t come back and that would be the end of the group. The society that was formed by Ralph is falling apart rapidly.
Chapter 5 (cont) • “You littuns started all this, with the fear talk.” • As the boys argue at Ralph’s meeting, blame for the disorder falls onto the younger boys, who have already formed their own faction. In societies, when problems are blamed on a group that is considered to be separate and when that group is alienated, there is often a negative outcome.
Chapter 6 • “I’m chief. We’ve got to make certain. Can’t you see the mountain? There’s no signal showing. There may be a ship out there. Are you all off your rockers?” • As the group investigates a ‘beast’, they find a cave. The majority of the group wants to go and play and the cave, and Ralph tries to keep focus. The group has different goals and can’t even keep their focus on what is scaring them, so tasks are not easily completed, if at all.
Chapter 6 (cont) • “Don’t you all want to be saved?” • As they search for the beast and the boys get distracted, Ralph becomes irate, and demands to know if they still want to be saved. Ralph’s focus is still on getting rescued, but he is the only one. The group is losing their focus, their original common goal, and that contributes to the disintegration of their society.
