  1. Raccoons By: Sammy Granoff

  2. Physical Characteristics Raccoons are mammals. They are covered in grey or black fur. The tail is gray with black rings around it. On their face they have black mask-like markings around their eyes. They have claws on their feet and a pointy nose. They weigh between 10 and 30 pounds and are 2 to 3 feet long.

  3. Habitat They live in suburbs, marshes, forests, cities, and prairies. They also live in trees all across the United States and in Central Canada. They build their dens in buildings or hollow trees. Raccoons are not afraid of people; sometimes they make a home in people’s attics, basement, garage or storage shed.

  4. Food Raccoons eat worms, mice, frogs, fish, and birds. They also enjoy insects, eggs, nuts, and fruit. Raccoons also look for food in trash cans.

  5. Adaptations Raccoons are not picky eaters, they eat almost anything. Raccoons have flexible fingers and toes which help them open trash cans. They also have good night vision for hunting.

  6. Interesting Facts Raccoons are nocturnal, which means they stay up and hunt at night and sleep during the day. They can live in the wild about 6 years. Raccoons are strong swimmers, who dunk their food into the water to wash it before eating. They are also good climbers.
