INTRODUCTION: • Cyamopsis tetragonalobacalled as cluster bean is referred to as GUAR. • The term guar has been evolved from the common use of the crop and its residue as cattle feed “Gowahaar” • Cluster bean has been cultivated in India and other countries over many centuries as a forage crop and remains so even today.

  3. Guar has however, got great recognition in recent times due to the presence of water soluble natural polymer “galactomannan” gum in the protein free endosperm portion of the seeds. • The galactomannan gum content, due to its specific qualities such as thickener, binder and stabiliser has versatile uses in a number of industries.

  4. Guar belongs to the family leguminaceae and subfamily papilinaceae. • It is a robust annual with a long tap root with well-developed laterals. • It is generally 50-100 cm tall and bears 4 to 10 branches (branch types). However non branch type-varieties have main stem only, which is heavily clustered with pods.

  5. Being tolerant to drought, heat and showing medium tolerance to salinity, guar provides adequate opportunity to utilise such adversities in realisation of production. Being a leguminous crop it enriches the soil health through atmospheric nitrogen fixation while providing valuable fodder for cattle. Guar pods are a very good source of vitamin A, calcium, iron, phosphorus and ascorbic acid, therefore, adding to its nutritional value.

Constituents of Guar Seed • Guar seed consists of three parts Hull: 14% - 17% Endosperm: 35% - 42% Germ: 43% - 47% • Guar seed extracts include Guar split/Gum: 30% Korma: 30% Churi: 40% • Guar split/gum is further refined to guar powder for easy storage. • The by-products of guar gum industry is Guar Meal, which is a source of protein and cattle feed.

  10. Applications of Food Grade Guar Gum Food industry guar gum is used as gelling,viscosifying,thickening and binding agent. • Frozen foods- Ice Cream. Puddings • Bakery products- Bread,biscuits & other baked foods. • Dairy products- Chocolate Milk, flavored milk. • Sauces & Salad preparations- Myonnaise, Ketchup & dressings. • Beverages- Soft drinks • Pet Food

Industrial applications Guar gum and its derivatives are widely used in various industries as per its need. • Textile industry – sizing, finishing and printing • Paper industry – improved sheet formation, folding and denser surface for printing • Explosives industry – as waterproofing agent mixed with ammonium nitrate, nitroglycerin, etc. • Pharmaceutical industry – as binder or as disintegrator in tablets; main ingredient in some bulk-forming laxatives • Cosmetics and toiletries industries – thickener in toothpastes, conditioner in shampoos (usually in a chemically modified version)

Industrial applications • Hydraulic fracturing : Shale oil and gas extraction industries consumes about 90% of guar gum produced from India and Pakistan. • Medical institutions, especially nursing homes - used to thicken liquids and foods for patients with dysphagia. • Fire retardant industry - as a thickener in Phos-Chek. • Nano particles industry - to produce silver or gold nano particles, or develop innovative medicine delivery mechanisms for drugs in pharmaceutical industry.

Guar in India • It is mainly grown in Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat and Punjab. • Rajasthan and Haryana states contribute to 85% of India’s production. • India contributes to around 80% share in the world’s total production. • Jodhpur city in Rajasthan is one of the major processing centers of guar gum in India. • The consumption of guar seeds is largely influenced by the demands from the petroleum industry of USA and China.

  15. Guar exports from India The world trade potential for guar gum- galactomannan, is currently at Rs 750 crores per annum and is estimated to increase to Rs 2500 crores by year 2018.

Benefits of Guar Cultivation • The guar plant flourishes in extremely drought resistant and semi-arid regions where most plants perish. • Guar crop does not require high doses of chemical fertilizers and heavy plant protection sprays. • Guar crop has not yet shown any serious pest and disease attacks which is therefore eco-friendly. • A suitable rhizobium culture treatment to the seed would go a long way in further improving the crop.

  17. Benefits of Guar Cultivation • The price of Guar is currently in the range of Rs 6000 to Rs 9000 per quintal delivered at Jodhpur. • Farmers can expect between 4 to 8 quintal per acre of seed production in 90 to 110 days. • The overall expenditure per acre is estimated at Rs. 5000 to 7000.

Suggestions for boosting Guar in South India • Government Support • Raise awareness and promote the crop by organizing field work shops with farmers etc. • Subsidies to the farming community. • Abolish taxation for this crop, as implemented in Rajasthan and Gujarat. • Setting up Research & Development Centers. • Creating necessary infrastructure facilities. • Entrepreneur’s Participation • Establishing processing units to produce Splits/Powder for direct export from the state. • Supply of quality Input seeds. • Setting up Procurement centers or Mandis in various locations.

  19. CONCLUSION: • Cultivating guar is of great opportunity for the farmers and industrialists. • Guar is a fruitful option for earnings to the resource constraint farming community in drought/ semi arid regions of South India.
