Breastfeeding Key Messages Minimum six months exclusive, and beyond as part of a healthy, balanced diet For baby, decreased risk of • Respiratory, GI, UTI, ear infections • Juvenile onset diabetes • Allergic disease • Obesity, High BP, CHD in later life For Mother, lower risk of • Breast and ovarian cancer It’s free, environmentally friendly and uses up to 500 calories a day!

UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative • Accreditation programme supporting best practice • Three stages • Stage 1 Policies & Procedures • Stage 2 Staff Education • Stage 3 Patient Care & Information • Progressing through Stage 2, accreditation due Dec 2011 • Regular audit • All professionals now expected to work to guidelines • NHS Breastfeeding Policy due for review in Dec 09

NHSG Breastfeeding Policy Review • Written to support Baby Friendly • Covers all staff working with pregnant women and new mums • effective and consistent advice and support concerning breastfeeding. • importance of skin to skin, rooming in • discourages use of teats, dummies • promotes culture where breastfeeding is the norm, also supports informed choice

  6. Breastfeeding rates in Grampian • UNICEF Baby Friendly has been proven to increase initiation of breastfeeding • In Grampian, 77% new mothers initiate, increasing steadily since 2006 • Drops typically by 20% in first two weeks • By 6 - 8 weeks, approx 37% • Stats from Infant Feeding Audit

  7. HEAT Target • H7 - “Increase the proportion of new-born children exclusively breastfed at 6-8 weeks from 26.6% on 06/07 to 33.3% in 10/11” • NHS Grampian target of 41.2% from 33.4% • Latest provisional figure 37.1% for 2008

  8. CEL 36 • SG funding to improve the nutrition of women of childbearing age, pregnant women and children under 5 in disadvantaged areas • Supports HEAT Target • Maternal and Infant Nutrition workstream • Inc Breastfeeding • Each CHP finalising workplans according to local need

National Breastfeeding Campaign • Breastfeeding Awareness Week 2009 • NHS HS national campaign • www.feedgoodfactor.org.uk • Promotes breastfeeding to partner and granparents • More activity planned Nov – Dec 2010 • Resources • Carshades, bibs, muslins • Pens, diary covers, sticky notes • Bookmarks, A5 Info sheets • Events planned for The Mall, ASDA, Tesco, Mothercare
