Minority Achievement Committee. MAC Scholars. MAC (Minority Achievement Committee) Founded in 1991 by a group of minority students and faculty members. Goal is to close the achievement gap between white and minority students and promote academic success at Shaker Heights High School.

MAC Scholars • MAC (Minority Achievement Committee) • Founded in 1991 by a group of minority students and faculty members. • Goal is to close the achievement gap between white and minority students and promote academic success at Shaker Heights High School. • Programs have expanded to the Middle School, Woodbury Intermediate

MAC Scholars • LJ Shelven, Brad Alexander • Advisors: Mrs. McGovern, Mr. McIntyre, Mr. Wiehe • 17 MAC Scholars that are either Juniors or Seniors • Our audience consists of 9th, 10th , and 11th grade African-American males. • Among those attending the meetings are high achieving students, future MAC Scholars, and students who are trying to improve their grades , Potential Scholars.

  5. MAC Sisters • Founded in 1998 by a group of African-American female students. • To encourage female students to take higher level classes • Self-esteem • Feelings of isolation within the class • Team-building • Encourage “mixing-it-up”

MAC Scholars • Two meetings a month and two planning meetings a month. • Meetings are held in the High schools’ small auditorium. • Scholars wear shirts and ties and encourage the same dress for those who attend meetings. • The audience is around 50-70 African-American male 9th-11th graders. • Meetings are run by the MAC Scholars, who are chosen through an interview process. • Meetings are held during one period during the school day (50 mins).

MAC Scholars cont’d • Planning meetings are conducted a week before each actual meeting. • The planning meetings are overseen by our advisors,Mrs. McGovern and Mr.McIntyre • During the planning meetings we brainstorm possible topics and themes for the next meeting. • Example topics are self-hate, keys to success, achievement gap, politics, etc… • We also work out the logistics of the meetings and assign roles.

MAC Sisters • African-American and Hispanic females with a 2.0 and above are invited to the meetings (approx. 60 attend) • This year’s theme is: Define Yourself • We do small group work and whole group • Currently working with elementary and middle school MAC female programs to continue them into the program • Business dress is requested

Sisters Keys to Success • Conference Calling • Collaborate on ideas in different classes • Talk to younger students about our experiences in Honors, AP, and IB classes • Talk about opportunities for positioning yourself academically • The impacts of self-esteem in classes • Overcoming counselors and teachers • Getting parents involved

Scholars Keys to Success • Encourage going to conferences • Encourage higher level classes: Honors and AP • Not giving in to peer pressure • Time management • Balancing sports and academics • Not fitting the stereotype • Being aware of current events • Maintaining high self-image and integrity • Being self-motivated • Encourage each other to stay in high level classes
