  4. Rotary is an International Organization • There are 532 Districts in more than 200 countries throughout the world. • Our club, Phoenix Arcadia Sunrise Rotary Club, is in District 5510. • The District covers northeastern third of Arizona.

  5. President Dong Kurn Lee Governor Donald LaBarge • Rotary International is governed by a president and a board of directors elected from all over the world. • Annually each District elects a District Governor - but each club is an autonomous group.

  6. Rotary Founder Paul Harris In the beginning… • The first Rotary Club was organized in Chicago in 1905, by Paul P. Harris.

  8. Women in Rotary • In 1987 women were admitted to Rotary. • Today, over 15% of Rotarians worldwide are women. • 78% of clubs admit women as members with over 2300 having women serving as presidents. • For the Rotary year 2007-2008 there are 63 women District Governors.

  9. Service Above Self • Rotary was not long to recognize that fellowship alone would not keep a group together — there needed to be a purpose. • First project was public washrooms in downtown Chicago. • Rotary became the world’s first “service club”.

Phoenix Arcadia Rotary Club (PARC) History • Founded July 1,1988 • Completing 20 years of Rotary Service • Two founding members still Active: • Dave Demaine • Mike Burke • 10 different meeting places: • Royal Palms Inn (three different times) • Arizona Country Club • The Springs of Scottsdale • The Phoenician Resort • The Velvet Turtle • Hermosa Inn • Mountain Shadows Resort • Vincent’s on Camelback

Phoenix Arcadia Rotary Club (PARC) History • Of 20 past and current Presidents: • Six are women • Two served twice • One made really dumb jokes • Dave Demaine has either been Secretary or Treasurer 12 times during the 20 years • Charter member Norma Taylor-Rodrique served as 5510 District Governor 1997-1998 • We have hosted or sponsored: • Five incoming GSE teams (20 PARC households) • Three Gift of Life recipients and families • Two Exchange Students • Three Ambassadorial Scholars • One World Peace Fellow • One Interact Club • One Rotaract Club (co-sponsor)

Phoenix Arcadia Rotary Club (PARC) Projects • Arizona Gift of Life • Providing open-heart surgery to needy children • Medical Home Project • Medical care for needy children who do not qualify for KidsCare or AHCCCS • Ambassadorial Scholar --Annalyn Censky, Czech Republic • To further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas • RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) • Rotary's leadership training program for young people

Phoenix Arcadia Rotary Club (PARC) Projects • St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance • Non-sectarian, nonprofit organization that alleviates hunger by efficiently gathering and distributing food to sites that serve the hungry • Wesley Community Center • Dedicated to empowering and assisting families in the south-central Phoenix community of Nuestro Barrio • St. Vincent DePaul Christmas Families • Provided holiday gifts for two needy families—10 people • Adopt A Street Cleanup • Indian School & 56th Street cleanup

  17. PHF & Benefactors • Many PARC Rotarians and spouses are Benefactors of the Permanent Fund. • About 20 are Paul Harris Fellows. • Many donate a small amount each quarter when paying dues.

  18. Phoenix Arcadia Rotary Exchanges • Group Study Exchanges • Teams of one Rotarian leader and four non-Rotarian business or professional young people visit the district for four to six weeks. • PARC Rotarians have hosted visiting teams and sponsored team members.

Phoenix Arcadia Rotary Exchanges • Rotary Youth Exchange Program • 16-18 year olds are exchanged world-wide. • Part of a 9,000 students/year program. • Rotarians host these young people in their homes for three to five months. • Students become part of the family. • PARC has hosted a Youth Exchange Student.

  20. Object of Rotary • The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: • First. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

  21. Object of Rotary • Second. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his or her occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

  22. Object of Rotary • Third. The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his or her personal, business and community life;

  23. Object of Rotary • Fourth. The advancement of international understanding, good will, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.

Club Service • Those things that a Rotarian does to help make successful the running of the local club. • Vocational Service • The promoting of the “ideal of service” throughout the business and professional world. • Community Service • Urges every Rotarian to participate in all activities which make the community a better place in which to live. • International Service • Encourage and foster the advancement of understanding and good will among people of the world.

  32. Your Obligations in Rotary Participation • To be a Rotarian you must give of your time and talents: • in community work • in social functions • in Club and District activities. PLAN NOW TO ATTEND THE DISTRICT CONFERENCE IN Flagstaff May 14-17, 2009.

  33. Your Obligations in Rotary Attendance • Attendance at the weekly meetings is a benefit of Rotary. A minimum of 60% is expected. • You can make-up at another Rotary Club within 14 days before or after a missed meeting; or by attending a PARC, District or RI event.

  34. Membership There are two types of membership in a Rotary Club: • Active • Honorary

Membership Prospective members must : • Hold (or be retired from) a professional, proprietary, executive, managerial, or community position • Have demonstrated a commitment to service through personal involvement • Be able to meet the club's weekly attendance or community project participation requirements • Live or work within the vicinity of the club or surrounding area

  36. Above all, Rotary is Fun • A service club should be fun to be a part of even when the work is tiresome. • PARC strives to be a fun, young-at-heart club. • Social events are offered regularly. • We live up to RI Past President Hugh Archer’s theme: “Enjoy Rotary.”
