  2. The Rotary Club of Arlington Heights Sunrise Meets: • Every Tuesday at 7:15AM – 8:30AM Doubletree Hotel – “Birch River Grill” 75 W. Algonquin Rd. Arlington Heights, IL 60005 Corner of Golf Rd & Algonquin Rd • Board meetings are held at 7:15 A.M. 1st Thursday of every Month at the Village Bank and Trust 234 W. Northwest Highway Arlington Heights

  4. Rotary Founder Paul Harris In the beginning… • The first Rotary club was organized in Chicago in 1905, by Paul P. Harris. The club, with four members, met in rotation at the offices of the members - thus the name Rotary. The other three original members were Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele and Hiram Shorey.

  5. Today! • Rotary is an organization of business and professional men and women united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

  6. Today - Rotary is an International Organization • There are over 530 districts and over 1.2 million members in over 165 countries. • Arlington Heights Sunrise Rotary Club is in District 6440 which is comprised of 72 clubs with over 3000 members as of July 2005. • The district covers North Eastern Illinois and consists of portions of Cook, DuPage, McHenry, Lake, and Kane Counties.

  7. Rotary International is now governed by a president and a board of directors elected from all over the world. 2009-10 Rotary District 6440 Governor 2009-10 Rotary International President John Kenny (Scotland) Annually each district elects a district governor But each club is automous

  8. Rotary District 6440is our Rotary District • District 6440 is in Zone 27 which contains 11 districts and over 34,600 members • There are over 1.2 million members worldwide • The Rotary’s International headquarters is in Evanston!

Paul Harris Fellows andBenefactors • Paul Harris recognition occurs with cumulative giving of $1000. 100% of the Arlington Heights Sunrise Rotary club are Paul Harris Fellows. • Benefactor recognition occurs with a gift in your estate of at least $1,000. • Bequest Society membership occurs with a gift in your estate of $10,000. 100% of our Rotarians are Sustaining Members, contributing $100 per year.

  14. Object of Rotary • The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. In particular, the Object is to encourage and foster:

  15. First • The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

  16. Second • High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his or her occupation as an opportunity to serve;

  17. Third • The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to, business and Community life;

  18. Fourth • The advancement of international understanding, good will, and peace through a world of fellowship of business and professionals united in the ideal of service.

The Privileges of Rotary • The privilege of FRIENDSHIP with other Rotarians in your community, neighboring cities and towns, throughout the USA and around the world • The privilege of GIVING SERVICE to your community • The privilege of DEVELOPING INTERNATIONAL GOODWILL and understanding • The privilege of helping BUILD HIGHER ETHICAL STANDARDS within your vocation through the common bond of Rotary

  20. THE FOUR-WAY TESTof the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

  21. Service Above Self • Rotary was not long to recognize that fellowship alone would not keep a group together — there needed to be a purpose. • The first service project was public restrooms in downtown Chicago, IL, USA. • Rotary became the world’s first “service club”.

  22. Women in Rotary today! • In 1987-88 women were admitted into Rotary • Each year about one third of the District 6440 club presidents are women. • About 10% of Rotary members are women, and the percentage is growing. • The first District 6440 woman Governor was Mimi Altman in 1995-96 followed by Karen Kline in 1996-97, Terry Mueller in 2002-03 and Pamela Kerr in 2008-09.
