  1. Scientific Revolution

  2. Changing Views of the Universe • Before shaped by theories of Ptolemy and Aristotle • Earth was center of the universe • View was accepted by the church

  3. Copernicus • Heliocentric – sun-centered model of the universe • Sun is at center • Earth is one of several planets that revolve around sun

  4. Copernicus is Rejected • All scientific knowledge was based off the classical thinkers • If there were wrong about this then all human knowledge could be wrong • Copernicus supported by Brahe – Observed and accumulated data

  5. Kepler • Assistant to Brahe – supported Copernicus • However – planets move in an oval-shaped orbit (eclipse)

  6. Galileo • Italy • Astronomical telescope – Four moons of Jupiter revolved around that plant • Contradicted ancient views • Challenged Christian teachings

  7. Galileo • Brought before inquisition • Forced to take back statement • “It does move”

  8. Scientific Method • Observation and Experimentation • Bacon and Descartes • Rejected Aristotle's assumptions • Truth is not known at the beginning but at the end

  9. Bacon • Experimentation and observation • Science make life better by leading to practical technologies

  10. Descartes • Human reasoning • Discourse on Method • Search for provable knowledge – only doubt • I think therefore I am

  11. Scientific Method • Step by Step process • State the Problem • Gather Information • Form hypothesis • Experiment • Collect data • Draw Conclusions • Communicate

  12. Medicine • Study of human body • Detailed books on human anatomy • Ointment for infections • Artificial limbs • Scientific instruments • Circulation of blood • Microscope

  13. Newton • Single force keeps planets in orbit – gravity • Nature follows uniform law • All motion can be measured and described mathematically • Law of motion and mechanics still in use today
