Exporting Files to PocketDog • Close PocketDog, but leave the field computer on. • Connect your PC and your field computer using Active Sync. • From OfficeDog’s File menu, select PocketDog Import. The PocketDog Transfer Tool window opens. • Select Step #1: Convert Setup Files. The Convert window opens.

Exporting Files to PocketDog • With the method still selected in the OfficeDog Method Files list, select the “Volume Tables” tab. • OfficeDog lists all the available volume tables, and highlights the ones associated with the selected method. • Select the tables you want to transfer, then select Export Tables • After exporting the tables select Close. • The PocketDog Transfer Tool window reappears.

  9. Exporting Files to PocketDog • From the Transfer Tool window, select Step #2: Transfer Files (jobs and setups). • The File Transfer screen appears.

Exporting Files to PocketDog • From the Transfer Mode field, select the type of file you wish to transfer (SpecFiles - methods, VolFiles - volume tables, or DogFiles - pick lists). • You must transfer the three components (method files, dog files, and volume tables) separately! • Select Send to Handheld, and wait for transfer. • Repeat for each file type as needed. • Select Close to complete the process.

Importing Job Files From PocketDog • Close PocketDog on your field computer, but leave the field computer on. • Connect your PC and your field computer using Active Sync. • From the File menu, select PocketDog Import. The PocketDog Transfer Tool window opens. • Select Step #2: Transfer Files (jobs and setups). The File Transfer screen opens.

Importing Job Files from PocketDog • In the Handheld list, select the job file on PocketDog that you wish to transfer. • You can transfer only one job file at a time. • From the Transfer Mode list, select Get JobFiles. • Select the “Get From Handheld” button. • Repeat steps for additional job files as needed. • Select Close to complete the process.

Selecting Data Fields • Selecting Data Fields for Tract, Stand, and Point Screens • To define text data fields for each level • From the Main Menu, tap Cruise Specifications. • In the SpecFiles list, highlight the spec file you want to modify. • From the View Cruise Specification list, tapTract/Stand/Point Data Fields. • Tap Go; the Text Data Field Settings screen opens.

Selecting Data Fields • In the Pick field at the top of the screen, tap either Tract Level Text Data Options, Stand Level Text Data Options, or Point Level Text Data Options. • Determine which fields to use by moving a given field to the On Fields list (fields that will appear on the data collection screen) or the Off Fields list (fields that will not appear). • To move a field from one list to the other, highlight the field name in its current list, then tap → or ←.

Selecting Data Fields • Change the order in which fields appear on the data entry screen by highlighting the field name in the On list, then selecting either ↑ or ↓ to move the field up or down. • Modify the screen name and corresponding pick list as needed. • To change the field name, highlight the field, then enter a new value in the Screen Name field. • To change the associated picklist, highlight the field, then select a new value from the PickList field. • Repeat steps 5-8 as needed to define custom text data fields at each level.

  18. Selecting Data Fields • When you’ve made all the necessary modifications, tap ok. PocketDog asks if you would like to save your changes. • To save your changes, tap Yes. PocketDog prompts you for a filename. You can overwrite the current file (the default name) or enter a new file name, then tap ok. • To return to the Cruise Specifications screen without saving any of your changes, tap Cancel.

Setting Up Field Behaviors • To set general field properties • From the Main Menu, tap Cruise Specifications. • In the SpecFiles list, highlight the spec file you want to modify. • From the View Cruise Specification list, tap Tree Data Fields and Behavior. • Tap Go; the Screen Setup screen opens.

Setting Up Field Behaviors • Determine which fields to display on the tree data screen by moving a given field to the On Fields list (fields that will appear on the tree data screen) or the Off Fields list (fields that will not appear). • To move a field from one list to the other, highlight the field name in its current list, then tap → or ←. • Change the order in which fields appear on the tree data screen by highlighting the field name in the On list, then selecting ↑ or ↓ to move the one position at a time. • To change the field name, highlight the field in either the On or the Off list, then enter a new value in the Screen Name field. • Set field-specific behaviors using the Edit Mask Rules table.

Edit Mask Rules Table • A double asterisk ** in the Species (SPP) column means the rule applies to all species for the associated product. • A double asterisk ** in the Product (PRD) means the rule applies to all products for the associated species. • The first row, with ** in the SPP field and ** in the PRD field defines the default behavior for all species/product combinations.

Edit Mask Rules Table • PocketDog prioritizes rules as follows • The rule for all species/all products (row 1) is the default behavior and applies only when no specific species/product rules have been defined. • Rules for specific species (all products) override the default behavior. • Rules for specific species (all products) override the default behavior. • Rules for specific species/specific product combinations override all other rules.

Edit Mask Rules Table • You can write rules for specific species/product combinations. • To display every species/product combination in the table, tap the Options button in the upper right corner of the screen, then tap Display EditMask For Each Spp:Prd. The Edit Mask Rules table displays all the generalized cases, as well as a row for every species/product combination. • To return to the default display, simply tap Options, then tap Display again to toggle the option off.

  26. Working with Cruise Files • To Create a New Job File • From the Main Menu, tap Open/Create Cruise File. The File Open screen appears. • In the Create New File field, enter the name of your new job. • Tap Create. • To open the file, return to the Main Menu, and begin recording data, tap ok.

  27. Working with Cruise Files • To Open an Existing File • From the Main Menu, tap Open/Create Cruise File. • From the Existing file list, select the job you want to work on. • To open the selected file and begin collecting data, tap ok.

  28. Entering Cruiser Information • Tap Cruiser Info from the Main Menu. The Cruiser Information screen opens. • Enter the data as appropriate.

  29. Entering Tract Data • To enter Tract Data, tap Tract Data from the Main Menu. • Enter data as appropriately.

The Stand Data window opens. • Creating and Numbering Stands • To add a new stand, tap Add in the Stand-Number field. PocketDog creates the stand and assigns it the next available number. • To delete a stand, use the scroll bar to locate the stand you want to delete, then tap . PocketDog asks you to confirm the deletion.

Default Data Fields • Stand ID: PocketDog puts the stand number in the ID field; you can either maintain this designator or edit the field using your own identifying system. • Stratum: If you want to maintain stands as discrete geographic units (e.g. for GIS), you can use the stratum field to link multiple stands together for management purposes. • Sample Type: The sample type is the inventory method used to gather data for all points in this stand. • All points in a stand use the same Sample Type. • Area: The size of the stand in acres.

Default Data Fields • Map Color: The map color provides a quick visual indicator of the stand on various screens in PocketDog. • To assign a map color to a stand, tap the color box; PocketDog displays a color palate. Choose a color, and tap ok (tapping X closes the palate without assigning the selected color to the stand). • Date: By default, PocketDog enters the date from the Tract Data screen. • Comments: The comments field allows you to add notes as appropriate.

  33. Entering Point Data • To enter Point Data, tap Point Data from the Main Menu. The Point Data window opens.

  34. Entering Point Data • To set Point Data screen options, tap the Options button in upper left to view the menu. A check next to the option means it is currently “on.” You can turn the following features on or off: • Off After ‘Add’ turns your field computer off after you add a new point to conserve the computer’s battery power. You can thus collect data for the current point, create a new point using the Add button, and slip your computer into your pocket. • Backup After ‘Add’ saves the data from the current point to an external memory card once you tap Add to create the next point. • Backup Now saves the data from the current point data to an externalmemory card immediately. • Left-Handed Screen reverses the fields on the screen.

  35. Creating Points • To create a new point, tap the Add button in the PointID field. • To change a point number, double-tap the PointID field. Enter any alphanumeric name you wish. • Stand: By default, PocketDog assigns thenew point to the stand used for the previous point. To change the stand, select a new value from the Stand list; the map color bar changes accordingly. • Custom Data Fields: Tap the Text Data button to enter data in the customized text data fields defined in the specification file

  36. Creating Points • Comments: Tap the Comment button to enter notes about the point. Tap Back to Trees to return to the Point Data screen. • Position Data: Tap the XYZ button to enter position coordinates for the point. • Include in Calcs: As in OfficeDog and FieldDog, you can determine whether or not to include a given point in your calculations.

Entering Tree Data • Enter the inventory data for each point in the Tree Data table on the upper portion of the screen. • To enter data in a table cell, select the appropriate value from the pick list. • Once you select a value, PocketDog enters the data and moves to the next field as determined by the specs. • If you return to a point that already contains tree data, PocketDog “locks” Tree Data table to prevent data loss. To unlock the point and edit or add additional tree data, tap the open hand ; the icon changes to a writing hand to show that you can now record data.

  38. Entering Tree Data • Deleting data: Tap the bomb to delete the current table cell. To clear the current row, all trees, or the entire point, tap and hold the ; Pocket-Dog displays several delete options to choose from. • Once you’ve entered all the tree data for the current point, tap Add to create a new point.

Calculating Limiting Distance • To determine the Limiting Distance for Plot Sampling: Tap LD to see the plot radius. • To determine the Limiting Distance for Point Sampling: • Tap LD; the Limiting Distance Calculator opens. • PocketDog uses the BAF from your sample method and displays limiting distance by DBH in increments of 0.1. • To see a new DBH range, select a different value from the DBH field. • To see the limiting distance for different slopes, select the appropriate value from the % Slope list.

  41. Viewing & Editing Points • To view any point in the current cruise file: • Tap the book icon in the Point ID field (lower left corner of the screen). PocketDog displays a list of current points. The color of each point number corresponds to the stand map color for that point.
