Writing a descriptive paragraph • The topic sentence consists of a person, place or thing that the writer intends to describe. • The topic sentence may be implied rather than stated. • Supporting points and details include various kinds of imagery • can be: subjective – expressing the author’s mood or feeling about the topic (ex: novels and poems). • can be: objective – expressing plain, unemotional facts; scientific (ex: graphs, facts, news stories). • Descriptive writing tends to be more “poetic” .

  4. Similes Similes compare two things that are usually not alike by using like or as.subject+ verb + like + (a/an or plural) singular noun She looks like an angel. subject+ verb+ as+ adjective+ as + (a/an/ or plural) noun My biceps are as hard as rocks.

  9. Metaphors Metaphors also show how things are alike, but we don't use the word like or as. Draw your interpretation of these metaphors. • He has a heart of stone. • For me time is money. • A blanket of snow covered the streets. • When she saw him in front of her, she froze with fear.

  10. Descriptions Objective Subjective Appeal to five senses What you actually hear, smell, touch. Describes how tings actually are, not your opinion about them. Describes what you think or feel about things. Appeals to sight. Uses emotionally loaded words like: lovely, stupid. These are opinion words.

  11. Ga-young has obtained excellent results in her reading and written communication scores. Her Math scores are satisfactory. • Ga-Young is an intelligent, young girl, but she is a real-trouble maker in class. She never listens to the teacher and is always fighting with other kids. Though I like Ga-young very much, she is very bad student.

  13. Write a paragraph using some of your observations Stick to one topic. Here are some examples: • SookmyungWomen’s University campus is beautiful in the spring. • Cherry blossoms are my favorite flowers. • I do not like being outside. • Spring is my favorite time of year.

  14. Sample Spring is the time of year that is the most refreshing. After a long cold bitter winter, spring comes and brings warmth, joy, and new life. The grass is revived and is becoming greener, the trees are decorated with buds just waiting for their chance to burst, and small green stalks are poking out of the cold dark earth grasping for light. The birds are singing, the flowers are blooming, and the world is at peace. Spring has come; it is my favorite time of the year.

  16. My most treasured object is my wedding ring. Seeing it around my finger makes me feel comfortable and relaxed because I know I have a partner who will always help me in life and share in all my joy and sorrows. The design of my wedding ring is very simple. It is a flat gold band with twelve small princess cut diamonds set in it. It always sparkles even when there is very little light, and it suits me perfectly. This ring is very special to me because my husband gave it to me with a promise to always be by my side. When I see it, it gives me strength because I always know, no matter what happens, my husband will always be there for me. My wedding ring represents my bond with my husband, this is why it is my most treasured item.
