  2. Background Information • AFSCME is one of the largest labor unions in the United States • Council 71 was chartered by the International Union in 1971 • Represents over 70 bargaining units • Assists workers in various fields.

Mission • To work for the establishment and maintenance of fair salaries, reasonable working hours, adequate working conditions and fair personnel policies for AFSCME members . • To foster and promote a good understanding between the AFSCME employees, their employers and the public. • To fulfill AFSCME's commitment to social justice for all Americans, through reasonable use of union energies and resources.

  4. AFSCME seeks to assist all working Americans who desire to ensure that their working environment is just and fair. • AFSCME represents people no matter their race, sex, sexual orientation or religious affiliation. Demographics

  5. On a national level, AFSCME conducts its business like many other major organizations. AFSCME has been long standing in the US because of its strong foundation. • AFSCME follows their constitution which includes: • Bill of Rights for Union Members • Objectives • Guidelines for Conventions • Executive Board • Judicial Procedures • Election of Officers • They have handbooks for local councils which also addresses procedures on conducting meetings. • AFSCME covers any and every detail within the organization and gives members the power to address issues that may arise and a chance to amend their constitution.   9. Affiliations • AFSCME affiliates include 60 associations; representing 450,000 independent and public employees. • Council 71 works closely with: • The United Nurses Association of Pennsylvania • United Child Care Union • Southern Pennsylvania Public Employees

One of the greatest strengths of AFSCME is its ability recruit and retain membership. • AFSCME’s community partnership instills leadership, morals, and ethnic values in its members. • Members take an active roll in government and exercise their right to protest. • AFSCME still face challenges in the political arena when it comes to the governments Strengths, Trends, and Challenges

  11. As an intern at Council 71 my role is to: • Observe the contract negotiation proceedings from start to finish • Develop an understanding of the arbitration process • Conducting investigative hearings • Day to day shadowing an assigned Staff Representative Intern’s Role
