  1. Oxidation-Reduction Reactions

  2. Redox Reactions • Reactions where e- are gained by one atom or ion and lost by another atom or ion • Reduction – gain of e- • Oxidation – loss of e- • Oxidizing Agent – reactant that accepts e- and so oxidizes the other reactant • Reducing Agent - reactant that donates e- and so reduces the other reactant

  3. Net-Ionic Equation • Redox reactions are written as net ionic equations • an ionic equation where the spectator ions have been removed

  4. Ex. Zinc metal reacts with copper sulphate to form copper metal and zinc sulphate

  5. Predicting Spontaneity • Write the net ionic equation • Add arrows to indicate gain/loss of e • Use oxidizer table to identify which metal is a stronger reducing agent and which ion is a stronger oxidizing agent • If the stronger reducing agent is losing e and the stronger oxidizing agent is gaining e, then the reaction will proceed spontaneously • If step 4 is not true, then the reaction will not proceed spontaneously

  6. Ex.

  7. Ex 2) Does the reaction between metallic iron and magnesium nitrate proceed spontaneously?

  8. 7. Which of the following will proceed spontaneously? a. solid aluminum and aqueous copper(II) sulfate b. aqueous calcium nitrate and solid nickel c. solid chromium and aqueous silver nitrate d. solid copper and aqueous magnesium chloride e. aqueous barium sulfate and solid tin f. aqueous calcium bromide and solid tin 8. If you wanted to use cobalt to showa reaction between a solid and an ionic solution, which of the following solutions would you use? Explain why. a. silver nitrate b. zinc sulfate

  9. 9. List three solid metals that, when placed in an aqueous solution of cadmium chloride, will react spontaneously. 10. Write net ionic equations for the reactions that you listed in question 9. 11. List three soluble salts that would react spontaneously with solid tin. 12. Write net ionic equations for the reactions that you listed in question 11.
