2. Summary • Katniss and Peta arrive back home in District 12 as victors of the Hunger Games. District 12, however, has changed for the worse since their return. President Snow has appointed new, brutal peace keepers who publicly beat Gale to an inch of his life for illegal hunting. President Snow also pays Katniss a personal visit threatening that she and her family are not safe unless she can quiet the uprising she ignited during the Hunger Games. Katniss and Peta attempt to appease President Snow by announcing they are going to be married. The Capital is all excited for the wedding and begin designing Katniss’ dress. Wedding plans abruptly halt, however, when President Snow announces that the special seventy-fifth games, named the Quarter Quell, will be comprised of all past victors from each District. This means that Katniss ad Peta are going back to the games. • Katniss’ goal is to keep Peta alive. Peta’s goal is to keep Katniss alive. However, Haymitch has bigger plans for both of them and forms secret alliances with almost all other victor tributes to keep Katniss alive because she is the mockingjay who can start the revolution. • The arena is designed as a clock with each hour bringing a different terror to the tributes, including an ocean surrounding the Cornucopia, misting acid fog, invisible force fields, carnivorous monkeys, lightening bolts and more. After many victor tributes die, Katniss shoots an electrified arrow into the force field where Haymitch and other rebels are able to rescue Katniss and a few others. Unfortunately, Peta was not rescued and he is taken bake to the Capital. Katniss is very angry with Haymitch for not being honest with her about his secret plans and for not rescuing Peta. Katniss loses the will to live until she is reunited with Gale. Gale tells her that District 12 is gone, bombed by the Capital, but her mother and sister luckily escaped to District 13. Katniss realizes she does have a reason to live…to be reunited with her family, to rescue Peta and to kill President Snow.
