Evolution of Mobile Networks and Services Evolution of Mobile Technology:
Introducing UMB™ Ultra Mobile Broadband™ and (UMB™) are trade and service marks owned by the CDMA Development Group (CDG).
3GPP2 Vision 3GPP2 is in the process of reviewing its scope and charter with respect to work beyond 3G such as that for IMT-Advanced.
UMB System Overview A technological breakthrough in next generation mobile broadband services • Delivers ultra-high fixed and mobile broadband performance (for System Release 1)*: • Forward link: data rates up to 280 Mbps • Reverse link: data rates up to 68 Mbps • Average network latency: 16.8 msec • Optimizes the Air-Interface to support Voice over IP (VoIP) • Enables the convergence of: • IP-based voice • Broadband data • Multimedia services • Information technology, entertainment, and consumer oriented electronic services • Utilizes an IP-based flatter and simplified network architecture • Commercial availability is expected in early 2009 UMB addresses a broad range of operator needs *Based on 2x20 MHz FDD band allocation and 4x4 MIMO. Latency is based on a 32-byte Return Trip Transmission (RTT).
UMB Air Interface Evolution • A consensus-driven and cooperative process from beginning to end: The entire development of the new physical layer was completed by full consensus within the PHY WG • Substantial input from Operators via the CDG-ETO (Evolution Team - Operators) • Just over 2 years from concept level workshop discussions to final air-interface standard
UMB System Release 1 • UMB System Release 1 (UMB-1) includes: • Enhanced cdma2000 air interface • Enhanced RAN (Radio Access Network) • Converged Access Network (CAN) Architecture • Enhanced All-IP Multimedia Domain (MMD) Core Network • Enhanced Systems and Services
UMB Air Interface • A highly competitive broadband air-interface that combines the best aspects of CDMA and OFDMA into a single air interface • Supports Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) and Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) antenna technologies • Supports sophisticated Fractional Frequency Re-use (FFR) schemes for improved edge-of-cell performance • Will support > 250 VoIP users in 5 MHz Bandwidth • Provides effective support for high bit-rate video services (bi-directional or asymmetrical) across the entire range of mobility conditions • A simplified Air-Interface Protocol Stack enhanced with Air-Interface Security for both data and signaling • Solutions deployable in either existing or new spectrum with channel bandwidths ranging from 1.25 MHz to 20 MHz channel bandwidths
Converged Access Network (CAN) Architecture • Flatter network architecture that is collapsible to 2 nodes: • Access Gateway (AGW) • Evolved Base Station (eBS) • Allows for consolidation of RAN functions at the eBS • Extends IP visibility to the eBS • Uses IETF protocols for network interfaces AAA HA UMB sRNC* Internet Intranet eBS AGW AT IMS EV-DO AT BS RNC PDSN PCRF *sRNC may be either centralized or distributed across eBSs
UMB Uses MMD Core Network • MMD is the All IP Multimedia Domain • Aligned with 3GPP IMS above the transport layer • Enhanced for Access Network Independence • Uses IETF Protocols • Supports Service Access Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
Conferencing Using MMD Dual IP Anchoring QoS differentiation and policy based QoS Fast Handoff IP mobility for Simple IP and Mobile IP terminals Network-based mobility management Presence Service Enhanced Security Voice Call Continuity SMS Over IMS MMD Emergency Services Multi-Media Priority Service MMD Roaming MMD Policy Enhancements MMD Supplementary Services On-line, off-line, and service based accounting Key Features and Servicesin UMB-1
Next Generation Technology Convergence • The use of IETF protocols in the Converged Access Network will smooth the way for additional network-technology convergence • PMIP (Proxy Mobile IP) • Diameter • EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) based framework • Work is currently in progress to support inter-working with non-3GPP2 technologies • 3GPP2 is eager to engage other standards bodies to converge the next-generation Air-Interface and Access Networks
UMB Evolution to IMT Advanced • UMB is uniquely positioned as the next generation technology due to its design with both: • A scalable air-interface • A scalable network architecture • Future UMB systems (air-interface and network) can evolve to support IMT-Advanced targets of 100 MHz bandwidth and 1 Gbps peak data rate with backward compatibility to UMB-1 • Member companies will provide inputs to formulate a detailed evolution roadmap in 2H07
