  1. Run for GOD Week 2

  2. Hebrews 12:1 (NKJV) “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witness, let us lay aside every weight, and sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

  3. Story • Edwin Moses-Olympic Athelete in Running • Read Story pages 17 through 18

  4. Questions • How can we be like a Christian Edwin Moses, one who teaches by his or her action? • What kind of distractions do you often have to hurdle or stumble on in your Christian walk? • Who best helps you stay in the race for salvation?

  5. Get in the Word • Workout 1- 1 Corinthians 9:24 • Paul used the illustration of a runner in this passage. To get the prize in a running race you have to train and be disciplined, even though the only prize you may be to finish. In our spiritual race, the prize is e eternity with our LORD. Just as if you are training for a 5K, you must be disciplined and must train in your spiritual walk by being the best witness you can possibly be. • Workout 2- 2 Timothy 4:7 (I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.) • Wow! These are Paul’s words as he neared the end of his life. It should be your goal to say these words when you finish your 5K. You never hear Paul mention winning the race; rather, he speaks about being diligent, disciplined, and faithful. Our goal should be to have the same response as Paul on the day we meet our LORD. • Workout 3- Hebrews 12:1-3 (Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked our for us.) • In this passage Paul tells us that we should lay aside everything that distracts us from being the best believer we can be. Quite honestly, this is very hard, and it’s impossible without a relationship with JESUS. How did you answer the second question? Those things that you wrote down are what Paul is telling you to lay aside. If you think it seems impossible, you’re right! In your capacity it may be, BUT with the LORD’s help it can be done. Pray about it and seek HIS wisdom.

  6. YOUR RUNNING GEAR!Now let’s focus on the “stuff” you need to run the race!

  7. Gear Running is an ideal sport for novice atheletes. Compared to other sports, running is fairly inexpencive. You will also not require a great deal of equipment.

  8. Gear-What you do need! • A good pair of sneakers in one of the MOST important pieces of gear for any runner. A quality pair will help you avoid injuries and make you more comfortable. • Comfortable socks are also important. Socks that do not fit properly or are not designed for running can cause you to develop blisters. Socks for runners are often designed with two layers. • Quality clothing appropriate for the season is essential. Lightweight for hotter climates and heavier weight clothes for cooler weather. Breathable fabrics that help wick moisture away from the skin keep the runner dry, cool, and prevent chafing. • The runner many want to invest in high-tech gadgets to aid in the running program. These include: the 5K iPod/iPhone APP, Heart Rate Monitors, Speed/Distance Monitors, Watches, etc. • Additional gear could include: Water Bottles, Gloves, Hats, Playlists, Pain Relief, Mace, Sunnglasses

  9. Workout 1, 2, and 3 Plan • Start with a brisk 5-minute warm-up walk. • Then alternate 90 seconds of jogging and 2 minutes of walking for 20 minutes. • Follow that with a 5-mintue cool-down walk. Week 2-Workout Plan Break it Down: Remember why you are doing this! It’s okay to drown out your thoughts while running, but it is also a great time to have a conversation with the LORD. Next time you run, try turning off the MP3 and just talk-and especially listen-to GOD. You may be surprised at what you may hear.

  10. “The Biggest mistake that new runners make is that they tend to think in mile increments-one mile, two miles, three miles. Beginning runners need to think in minutes, not miles.” -Budd Coates, Olympic Coach, Four-Time US Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifier Tip of the Week: Be a minuteman.
