  1. Max Planck

  2. Personal Story • Born in Kiel Germany April 23rd1858 • Died at Göttingen on October 4th 1947 • University of Munich and Berlin • Doctorate of Philosophy at Munich • Son executed

  3. Idea of Atom • Oscillating atoms absorb and release energy in quanta ( small energy packets or bundles) • Energy equals frequency times Planck’s constant. E=hv • Planck’s constant is 6.626x10-34 J*s • Energy packets are released only in whole units

  4. Experiments/Study • Thermodynamics • Quantum Theory • Energy radiation of heated solids

  5. Scientific Contribution • Proposed energy can behave like a particle • Einstein used the quantum theory to explain the photoelectric effect • Bohr used the quantum theory to explain the bright line spectrum • Quantum theory was the first step to explain why atoms didn’t collapse like Rutherford predicted

  6. Bibliography • http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/laureates/1918/planck-bio.html • http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/biography/Planck.html • BC Science Chemistry 11 • http://www.thebigview.com/spacetime/quantumtheory.html
