  2. Overview of Presentation Objectives Background materials – Country Profiles, Groups – based on country and sub-regional Outputs

  3. 1: Objectives Gain a common understanding amongst PHT members of the varied response scenarios and capacities in Pacific emergencies. (This afternoon) Based on scenarios most likely to require a regional response, determine what actions cluster must undertake, what is in place, where are the gaps to be addressed through preparedness measures. (Wednesday) Enhance partnerships and understanding amongst participants of regional and national mechanisms and capacities for disaster response. (throughout process) Common document for PHT preparedness, EPREP, updated and available. (outputs from this and other PHT sessions)

  4. 2: Materials Country profiles and some HFA/Regional Framework for Action documents. Coordination structures Guidance/template (with set of structured questions)

  6. 3: Groups Eight working groups: 1. North Pacific - FSM, Marshals, Palau 2. Central Pacific - Kiribati, Tuvalu, Nauru, 3. Cook Islands, Tokelau, Niue, 4. Samoa 5. Tonga 6. Vanuatu 7. Solomon Islands 8. Fiji

  7. 4: Outputs In working groups, discuss: What are most significant disaster events; What humanitarian needs these constitute; and Capacities to respond to these. Sub-regional groups to come up with 1-2 scenarios that will inform Wednesday's Response and Preparedness Planning Exercise.

  8. Please fill out an info sheet (Word doc.) for each scenario: • Most likely hazards that will trigger/require a significant response, National and regional capacities to detect early warning signs for identified hazards, and monitoring capacity • Projections of humanitarian needs of affected population; • Characteristics of affected population and particular vulnerabilities • National capacities and thresh holds for requiring regional/external assistance; • Clarify coordination arrangements where needed; • International response ”driver”;(e.g. donor) • Priority sectors where needs are likely to be greatest; • If external response is required, what would national authorities most likely request of the PHT, or, what should the objective(s) of the PHT response be.
