The Four Systems of Community Colleges California State University University of California Independent Colleges Higher Education in California • Vocational and Academic Instruction • Provide lower division coursework for students seeking to transfer to a university • Undergraduate and Graduate instruction in the liberal arts and sciences, professional education and teacher education • Over 360 different majors • The only public system to offer degrees in medicine, dentistry, law and veterinary medicine • Over 400 different majors • Focus on research and methods • Provide undergraduate instruction and research based on their school’s mission • Different Entrance Requirements • Offer a wide range of degrees and programs

  17. Earn the best academic grade point average (GPA) in all completed “A-G” courses. Take as many University-approved honors, AP, IB and transferable college courses as possible. Take as many academic college prep coursesbeyond the minimum requirements. Study for your SAT’s or ACT to obtain a competitive score. Share with us your special: talents, achievements, awards, performances, athletic achievements, community service, leadership roles. Remember – thousands of students apply and you want to stand out. Write a strong personal statement. What can you do to be more competitive?

Then What? • Don’t relax after applying . . . there is still a lot to complete before getting admitted • After applying you must complete: • Financial Aid(January 1st – March 2nd) • Scholarships(All Year) • Housing Applications(January – May) • Placement Tests(January – May) • Vaccination Clearance • Transcript Submission(January – May) • INTENT TO REGISTER FORM(March – April) • Colleges will often request extra forms and documents from students – check your email

Important Tips • If you plan to drop a class after applying to the university, you must let the campuses know • Maintain good grades throughout your senior year • Most acceptance letters are provisional, meaning that your admission status can be affected by your senior year • Communicate with your counselors and your campus(es) admission department

ELM / EPT Info You may be exempt from taking the ELM / EPT or AWPE through your SAT or AP Scores – Check with your counselor Placement Tests California State University • ELM: Entry Level Mathematics • Designed to assess the skill levels of entering CSU students in the areas of mathematics typically covered in three years of rigorous college preparatory mathematics courses in high school • Necessary for Enrollment • EPT: English Placement Test • Designed to assess the level of reading and writing skills of entering undergraduate students so that they can be place in appropriate courses • Necessary for Enrollment • AWPE: Analytical Writing Placement Examination • Demonstrates an incoming UC student’s command of the English language • Students who have not met the Writing Requirement by April 1, will receive an e-mail or letter directing them to a nearby test center www.ets.org University of California

Housing • DO NOT wait until you are admitted to apply for housing – CONTACT HOUSING DEPARTMENT AFTER APPLYING • Meal Plans will often be included into housing packages • Tips to On-Campus Housing • Request an on-campus housing Agreement after you applied for admission and received an campus account or ID number • Complete License Agreements • A student will be eligible for on-campus housing once a completed License Agreement, including initial payment, is received. • Students are usually placed on a first-come, first-served, space-available basis.
