  1. New routes for teaching in the Upper Rhine Basin Prof. Jean-Marc JELTSCH Vice-president Intellectual Property, Contracts & Partnerships April 23rd, 2015

  2. The Upper Rhine Basin Université de Strasbourg Jean-Marc Jeltsch April 23rd2015 www.unistra.fr

  3. Expending a model • From ideas to materialization. • Is small always beautiful? • Is it better to be irreproducible or to be a leader emulated worldwide? • Key principles for a successful and long term cooperation. • Our common thread through this keynote discussion will be the case study of the ESBS… • “EcoleSupérieure de Biotechnologie de Strasbourg” Université de Strasbourg Jean-Marc Jeltsch April 23rd2015 www.unistra.fr

  4. Case study: Strasbourg Graduate School of Biotechnology (ESBS) • The right place for a tri-national curriculum. • ESBS is an international school providing German, French and Swiss students with a French engineering diploma in biotechnology. • This trilingual curriculum allows the diploma to be recognized in the three countries. ESBS students are also required to spend two to six weeks in the School's partner universities (Basel and Freiburg). • Most of the courses are taught in Strasbourg and in French, German and English. • The School works closely with the industry: scientists from various companies are involved in the courses. • http://www.en.unistra.fr/index.php?id=21896 • http://esbs.unistra.fr/ (new site released - only in French- on April 15th 2015). Université de Strasbourg Jean-Marc Jeltsch April 23rd2015 www.unistra.fr

  5. Fragments of History • 1982: Launching of the curriculum as a French engineering school within the university. • 1988: First example of a tri-national program (Switzerland – France – Germany) in 3 years with a limited class size of 40 students (20 French and 20 German and Swiss). • 1989: First piece of choice of the newly created EUCOR. • 2009: The KIT jumps out off the program. • 2010: Reorganization of the studies with Basel, Freiburg and Strasbourg partners universities. • 2014: Enhanced cooperation between ESBS and ECPM and launching of a Chem-biotech program. Université de Strasbourg Jean-Marc Jeltsch April 23rd2015 www.unistra.fr

  6. Testimonies in 2012…20 year birthday “I am very proud of the ESBS also because its a sort of material achievement - research is often non material. It provides its students with the chance to use the brain to improve life for mankind.” Prof. Pierre Chambon, co-founder of the ESBS “ESBS students are educated to deal with multicultural experiences. As a HR responsible, I can say: ESBS students are trained to be problem solvers and solutions finders.” Christian Döhring, ESBS Alumni, Promo 1992 Université de Strasbourg Jean-Marc Jeltsch April 23rd2015 www.unistra.fr

  7. Systems and regulations… • The launching in 1999 of the bologna process. • (http://ec.europa.eu/education/policy/higher-education/bologna-process_en.htm ). • Mobility (Erasmus) • ECTS • L,M,D. • The French law for remodeling the universities (LRU, 2007). • ( see also http://www.senat.fr/rap/r12-446/r12-446-syn.pdf ). • “Exzellenzinitiative” in Germany: among the laureates, the two partner universities, Karlsruhe (success in 2006, evolved as the KIT) and Freiburg (in 2007). Both weren’t renewed for the label in 2012. • “Initiative d’excellence” in France, University of Strasbourg one of the 3 laureates of the first run in 2011. Université de Strasbourg Jean-Marc Jeltsch April 23rd2015 www.unistra.fr

  8. Five principles for a successful partnership(adapted from Guy Pelletier** - Université de Montréal – Québec) • Partners share a mutual interest It’s essential to envisage a viable common life • Partners are equal A partnership doesn’t rely on hierarchy • Each of the Partners remains autonomous Any of the partners engages itself on its own and acts freely. • Partners cooperate effectively A given program can only meet success when driven by a true and sincere cooperation of all the partners • Partners and partnership are expected to evolve A partnership is always evolving during a joint work program and in some cases can run to an end, in other situations can led to a new challenge, but in all situations, Partners should have progressed. ** Le partenariat: du discours à l’action. In La Revue des Échanges (AFIDES), Volume 14, n° 3, septembre 1997, dossier “ Éducation et partenariat ”. http://www.unige.ch/fapse/life/textes/Pelletier_A1997_01.html Université de Strasbourg Jean-Marc Jeltsch April 23rd2015 www.unistra.fr

  9. Names and labels… Take care of the protection of a brand name, acronyms, a.s.o. (http://www.acronymfinder.com/ESBS.html) For example, although the School is the first to come out, the next is given hereafter: The ESBS is a multidisciplinary, scientific association of skull base sciences (http://esbs.eu/ ) Université de Strasbourg Jean-Marc Jeltsch April 23rd2015 www.unistra.fr

  10. Finally as a conclusion…the discussion ???? & Thank you for your contributions! Université de Strasbourg Jean-Marc Jeltsch April 23rd2015 www.unistra.fr
