  7. What you will see after authenticating • You will recognize your home directory (Z drive), but the T drive will look like this…

  8. Choose the appropriate folder on the T drive… • You should have no problem getting into the folder/s for which you have permissions on the T drive (just like on campus) • If you do encounter problems, there could be permission restrictions • You can troubleshoot this if you add the direct path of your share folder • \\storage\EMT\als1007

  9. Connecting to Remote Desktop • Can’t always use host names • Know your IP address (ipconfig) • Make sure your Remote Desktop is enabled • Connect to VPN…launch Remote Desktop Connection • Use your IP address in to connect • IP addresses change for most people, so be sure you know what it is before leaving campus

  10. Connecting to your hard drive • Can’t always use host names • Know your IP address (ipconfig) • Make sure you are a local administrator • Connect to VPN • Start  Run \\128.193.224.224\c$ • IP addresses change for most people, so be sure you know what it is before leaving campus

  11. MacOS X connections • Connections to SCIENCE servers require that you run MacOS X 10.3 or higher • Connect to VPN • From the "Go" menu at the top of the screen • click "Connect to Server"

  12. MacOS X connections • To connect to the T drive type in… • smb://storage.science.oregonstate.edu • To connect to the Z drive (home directory) type in… • smb://science.oregonstate.edu

  13. MacOS X connections

  14. Web VPN • OSU offers a web based VPN client • https://sds.oregonstate.edu • There are some glitches with the interface, the certificate is expired…this throws up red flags • Trust the certificate (click yes to several pop-ups) and you can establish a connection

  15. Web VPN and OSU_PUB • Web VPN can be used in conjunction with OSU_PUB to provide secure connections • Once you are connected to OSU_PUB then go to https://sds.oregonstate.edu • This will not work unless you are using OSU_PUB to obtain an IP address

  16. Problems… • Users have complained of dropped sessions • Wireless connections can be inconsistent and cause sessions to drop • Sessions left idle for long periods of time will drop • ISP’s with physical cable problems can cause session drops • There is no set time for your connection to terminate, but if it is idle and others trying to authenticate, it will bump you off
