Stop & Think… • Have you ever noticed what happens to salad dressing made with oil and vinegar/water? • If you were to shake a bottle of salad dressing made with oil and vinegar/water, would the ingredients mix or stay separated? • Discuss with your partner and come up with an answer! The oil and vinegar/water will… MIX or STAY SEPARATED

  3. Great Job! • You and your partner just made a prediction. A prediction is made before you experiment and is based on things that you already know. • Through this activity, we are going to see for ourselves whether or not oil and water mix. We are also going to be testing if water and another substance, rubbing alcohol, mix. • Now, let’s test your prediction…

  4. Materials • For this activity, you and your partner will need: • 2 glass jars • Food coloring • Water • Vegetable oil • Rubbing alcohol

  5. Directions • Fill both jars halfway with water. • Put 3 drops of food coloring into each jar of water so we can tell which substance is the water. (Now, it will be the colored substance! The food coloring does affect the water at all.) • Put one jar aside for now. • In one jar, pour some vegetable oil on top.

  6. What Happens? • Observe with your partner what happened when you poured the vegetable oil on top of the colored water. Write down some of your observations. • Now, shake the jar side-to-side gently. Do the oil and water stay mixed? Write down your answer.

  7. Now it is Time for the Rubbing Alcohol. • Take the jar that you placed aside earlier filled with the colored water. • Pour some rubbing alcohol slowly down the side of the jar.

  8. What Happens? • Observe with your partner what happened when you poured the rubbing alcohol on top of the colored water. Write down some of your observations. • Now, shake the jar side-to-side gently. Do the rubbing alcohol and water stay mixed? Write down your answer.

  9. Think About It… • Why does oil float on water? • What was the difference between the vegetable oil and the rubbing alcohol? • By replacing the oil with the rubbing alcohol, were you able to find out what was causing the liquids to separate? • Why was the oil spill in Oliver’s ocean so damaging to his habitat?

  10. Density • Density is a term that describes how heavy something is with a constant volume. It also describes how closely packed the material is. For example, a glass cup is more dense than a plastic cup. Even though they are the same size, the glass material is heavier and more closely packed than the plastic material.

  11. Density Continued • Let’s refer back to the activity you just completed. Since the oil floated on top of the water, do you think the oil is more dense or less dense than the water? • Hint: If you dropped a marble into a glass of water, it would sink…right? So, a marble is more dense than water. If you dropped an ice cube into a glass of water, it would float…right? So, an ice cube is less dense than water.

  12. Immiscible & Miscible Liquids • What do you think it means when liquids are immiscible? (Think about the oil and water as an example…Did they mix?). • What do you think it means when liquids are miscible? (Think about the rubbing alcohol and water as an example…Did they mix?).
