Fluency • Good readers… • use punctuation to tell them when to pause or stop and what tone of voice to use. • a comma signals a pause • a period signals a stop for a statement. • a question mark signals a stop for a question. • an exclamation signals a stop for something exciting or important.   12. Fluency • I am going to read aloud a passage from “How Animals Talk.” I will let the punctuation guide me. I will pause at commas and stop at periods. If I see a question mark, I will make my voice sound questioning.   13. Main Idea and Details • The main idea is the most important idea in a piece of writing. • Supporting details are the information and facts that tell about the main idea. Not all details in a passage support the main idea. These details might be interesting, but they do not necessarily support the main idea. T247

  18. A dictionary is a book people use to find a word’s meaning, spelling, part of speech, and pronunciation. Dictionaries are organized in alphabetical order with guide words at the top of each page.

  19. A thesaurus is a book people use to find synonyms. Synonyms are words that mean almost the same thing. A thesaurus is set up like a dictionary. happy- cheerful, joyful, glad, delighted, pleased, satisfied, content

  20. An atlas is a book people use to find a map of a state, country, or part of the world.

  21. An encyclopedia is a set of books that people use to find information. Topics are arranged in alphabetical order.
