Design Problem and Opportunity • The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board has proposed that students would benefit to take classes at a variety of school locations across the region in the same day • The school board has selected Magnetic Levitation Technology to power the vehicles because it is fast (so students are on time for their classes), smooth (students can do homework during their travel) and environmentally friendly (emission free)

  5. Design Problem and Opportunity • The school board hopes to begin building the track early in the 2011school year • Your design firm has been contracted to design a high speed MagLev vehicle to transport the students between locations • A race has been scheduled to review the best designs in action

Design Brief • The prototype racer must be no larger then 75mm Wide x 150mm Long x 100mm High • The power must be generated by a single motor and propeller provided • The vehicle must levitate using no more than 6 magnets • The materials used must be plastic, wood and/or Styrofoam • Goal is to make the vehicle as fast as possible

  7. Research and Investigation • Research 5 man made vehicles for that are used for speed • Discuss 3 aspects of their design that assist it to achieve a high speed performance • Make sure you reference the websites (not just Google)

  8. Generation of Solutions • Draw 5isometric thumbnail sketches • The design solutions must incorporate at least one or more aspects found in your research of high speed vehicles

  9. Selecting the Best Solution • Team up with a partner • Each team member is to create an Attribute Matrix to assist in the selection of the best design solution of the 4 isometric drawings use at least 5 criteria to analyze the designs

  10. Selecting the Best Solution Score each design 1-5 for each criteria: • 5 = meets criteria totally • 4 = meets criteria mostly • 3 = meets criteria somewhat • 2 = meets criteria very minimally • 1 = does not meet criteria

  11. Selecting the Best Solution • Tally each column of the attribute matrix to determine which design best represents the necessary design requirements Most Desirable Least Desirable

  12. Selecting the Best Solution • Combine the scores of each design to determine the selected design • Write a concluding paragraph to discuss if the selected solution scored the highest in your Attribute Matrix Why? Or Why not? • Discuss with regards to the criteria that you analyzed it to.

  13. Detailing the Design • Create an Orthographic Drawing of your design solution include dimensions • Create a Bill of Material of all the parts that will be used in the Model

  14. Modeling the Design • Construct the working scaled down prototype of your MagLev vehicle design

Testing and Evaluation • Test your vehicle design on the race track and document any modifications that you made to optimize the vehicle’s performance • Create a chart to document the change in speed based on the modifications made • Write a one page reflection on your design experience by discussing 3 challenges faced and the solutions, 3 features on the design you would change and 3 highlights of design
