  1. Week Two American Lit Fourth Quarter

  2. Am. Lit DO NOW 4/22/13 • Have your MLA format citation practice homework out for me to check (from last week. Yellow sheet of sources you wrote citations for and made three source cards) • Respond in full sentences: • Where were the Jim Crow Laws? Have you ever heard of Richard Wright or the novel Black Boy?

  3. Black Boy is Richard Wright's memoir of his life from early childhood to the launching of his career as a writer. His father abandoned the family soon after they moved to Memphis, leaving Wright, his mother and brother in dire straits. Schooling throughout his childhood was erratic and often interrupted; he eventually completed the ninth grade. Domestic violence, neglect and hunger plagued him throughout his youth.

  4. Wright's first prolonged contact with white people came when he began working odd jobs to earn enough money for food. The discrimination and violence he experienced in the Jim Crow South came as a terrible shock to him. Time and again, Richard was the target of white hatred because he failed to hide his true thoughts and feelings behind a mask of servility and humility. Finally, resolved to leave the South forever, Richard scraped together enough money to move north to Chicago

  5. Wright vividly describes the intellectual awakening he experienced in Chicago as he immersed himself in the works of Dreiser, Mencken, Faulkner and Sherwood Anderson and began his first serious efforts at writing. Black Boy ends with an image of Wright sitting poised with pencil in hand, determined to "hurl words into this darkness and wait for an echo." He had arrived at the threshold of his professional literary career.

  6. Read with a purpose: Keep track of the major plot events. We will be comparing this excerpt to a song where the artist has similar experiences, feelings and opinions as Richard does in his autobiographyy Black Boy. HW: Finish reading through the first 5 pages for Wednesday. There will be a reading check. 50 notes and 5 sources cards!!!

  7. Am Lit 4/24/13 DO NOW: • Summarize (main ideas) what we have • read so far in Black Boyin a couple • complete sentences

  8. Am Lit 4/24/13 • HW: Finish the excerpt. Answer the • end of story questions 1-5 • 50 notes and 5 source cards!

  9. Am Lit: 4/25/13 DO NOW • Do Now: Get a handout from the stool and read the lyrics to the song once. I know you are done because you will be sitting quietly, reading to hear the song. • Today, we are looking for similarities from Black Boy and “Elliot” • HW: 50 notes and 5 sources cards!!

  10. Am. Lit. 4/26/13 DO NOW • In one to two sentences, write out a possible thesis for your research paper. • Today, I will be checking your cards while we look a little closer at what a good thesis looks like. • You will need to have an outline for your essay in ONE WEEK, next Friday. A thesis is a start to the outlining process. (And I don’t care if “you don’t outline.” You are outlining. All research writers outline. You can “just write” if you want to first, but then outline what you wrote by NEXT FRIDAY…can’t outline what you wrote? That’s because its an unorganized mess!)
