  2. What Happens? (pathophysiology) • Complex • HIV causes AIDS by depleting CD4+ T helper lymphocytes • Weakens the immune system and allows opportunistic infections • Opportunistic Infection- when the body’s immune system gets weak and there is and opportunity for infection

  3. Signs and Symptoms • Caused by the deterioration of the immune system and the decline of CD4+ T cells • Diarrhea that lasts for more than a week • Dry cough • Memory loss, depression and neurological disorders • Pneumonia • Profound, unexplained fatigue • Symptoms of opportunistic infections common with AIDS include • Coma • Coughing and shortness of breath • Difficult or painful swallowing • Extreme fatigue • Fever

  4. Who gets it? • Sometimes, AIDS is thought of a disease that only effects homosexual men. The truth is that every population gets AIDS. AIDS is a blood-borne disease that can be transferred during sex or by needles.

  5. Prevention • Use a condom during sex • Don’t share needles

  6. How its diagnosed • By certain signs and symptoms examples ◦Pneumonia that is recurrent ◦Cervical cancer that is invasive ◦Herpes simplex including ulcers lasting more than a month or bronchitis, pneumonitis or esophagitis

  7. Treatment • There is no cure for AIDS, but medications are effective in fighting HIV and its complications. Treatments are designed to reduce HIV in your body, keep your immune system as healthy as possible and decrease the complications you may develop.

  8. Prognosis • The prognosis for individuals with AIDS in recent years has improved significantly because of new drugs and treatments, and educational and preventive efforts • Death is possible
