  2. Thriller is a genre of film (or TV & literature) • Thriller uses • MYSTERY • SUSPENCE • TENSION • & EXCITEMENT as its key elements.

  3. Some brief history of the thriller genre • One of the earliest thrillers was, safety last (1923) Harold Lloyd. • One of the best and earliest thriller film makers/directors was Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock helped to shape the modern day thriller with one of his earliest silent films, The Lodger (1926) a tension filled, jack the ripper story line.

  4. Subgenres of thriller • Crime e.g. Double indemnity(1944) • Psychological e.g. Freaks (1932) • Legal e.g. A few good men (1992) • Disaster e.g. Deep impact (1998) • Erotic e.g. Body heat (1981) • Conspiracy e.g. The Manchurian candidate (1962) • Medical e.g. The Andromeda Strain (1971) • Political e.g. Notorious (1946)

  5. Mise-en-scene • Settings – abandoned houses/mansions, middle of no where locations • Props – knifes, guns, cars • Costume & make up – police uniforms, prison uniforms, spy outfits, women in dresses (innocent) • Lighting – low-key lighting, shady

  6. Audience Expectations • When audiences begin to watch a thriller film, they expect to come across, twists, excitement, mystery or even finding themselves sitting on the end of their seat.

  7. Target Audience • The target audience for thriller depends on the type/kind of thriller (subgenre). • But in my opinion, from my research I think the target audience for the general thriller genre is boys/men aged 18-30, although if the main character in a thriller is a girl I think girls will be more interested as they can relate to the character.

  8. Character Representation • Convicts • Criminals • Stalkers • Assassins • Innocent victims • Cops • Psycho’s • Terrorists • Private eyes • Menaced woman • Escaped cons

  9. Initial ideas • Our opening sequence will be stalker themed. • We chose this because a lot of people can relate to a stalker movie as this can happen to anyone which makes it even more thrilling to watch.
