  1. The Thriller genre The thriller genre is one which is built upon fast paced, frequent action, along with heroes who are resourceful to the fullest. The techniques of suspense, red herrings and cliff hangers are plot devices which are used extensively throughout any text with this genre. By Dan, Ryan and Jess

  2. Sub Genres The thriller genre is not one which can be confined to a strict set of rules, the various sub-genres add variety and a different approach to presenting an idea. Some of which include: Action, Conspiracy, Crime, Disaster, Drama, Eco, Horror, legal, Medical, Political, Spy, Supernatural, and Techno. However the sub-genre that we wish to focus on would be Psychological as this is the perfect sub-genre to extenuate character, and take the focus off the sets and sequences for example, as we simply lack the resources to make these work to their fullest effect.

  3. Openings Here is the opening to Vertigo. We can see the use of phobias being used here. The police officer obviously has a phobias of heights and this clips plays on this fear.

  4. Psychological Thriller A psychological thriller as previously mentioned, takes the focus away from plot in favour of presenting characters as the main point of interest. Therefore in a Thriller of this type, it is necessary to have good actors, a solid script, tense music and interesting camera work in order to sustain the viewer’s interest and create a story which revolves around the characters central conflict around each other. Themes are also important when considering a Psychological Thriller…

  5. Film Clips • The next clip is from the film Psycho, the suspense that is created is key to the psychology of the piece.

  6. Themes Reality - Characters often try to determine what is real or not within the narrative Perception – A person’s own unique interpretation of the world surrounding them. Characters will often misconceive the world around them. Mind - The location for personality, thought, reason, memory, intelligence and emotion, the mind is a hub for a character’s perception and reasoning of what is taking place around them. Conflict will often arise here. Existence/Purpose– A character will often try to figure out their own existence, and will struggle to obtain it. Used as another base for conflict. Death – Characters either fear death or have a fascination with it.

  7. Trailer • The Final Clip is a trailer from the film The Sixth Sense, the film plays on the fears of ghosts and the link between ghosts and humans through a young child. We can see the use of fears of ghosts being used during the trailer.

  8. Our Project Based on the research that we have undertaken, and the film clips we have seen. We have decided to base our piece of film on a thriller. We have also researched the sub genre of psychological thriller, and found that this might be a bigger challenge for the group.
